I live in an old Kansas farm house.
The temp went down to -4 last night.
Wind chill -14.
Water dripping in every faucet.
Awoke to no drips...:mad
I have the KC BMW MC party tonight.
People will love to see me...
You should see my hair right now.
The house is so cold the furnace is on almost all the time.
Last month the gas bill was $800.:cryin:
The wood stove is blasting.
And my allergies are raging from the smoke and ash.:(
I need a small break right now.
With none in site...
Did I tell anyone that the fridge, washing machine and my car blew the motor in the last 19 days...
I could start drinking again...
Sorry I just needed to rant....
I'm now going back to bed. It's too cold to go work in the shop...:boring:

I feel for you, it's ridiculously cold here in Central IL too. :(
However, we sold our house three years ago and now live in an apartment...so it's plenty warm and if something breaks we call the landlord!
BTW - I thought my heating bill of $150 was over the top, I'd go postal if I got an $800 bill.

Sorry Dakar :( I feel bad for you.
When things break they seem to come in waves. Why is that?
I know that sub zero weather is on it's way east "They" say Sunday it is going to be extremely cold here.
I have an idea:  Ask Nut to "borrow" :happy a plane and bring you to AK. I think it is warmer there.

I'm sorry Dakar, I wish Nut could "borrow" that plane. It was 9 here this morning, but the house is warm and we have a nice stack of wood out back to keep the fire blazing.

Yes indeed the hard drive is dead. I will send it off to a data retrieval place to see if they can get my pics off of it. The back up drive that I had was formatted in a way that the Mac did not like and I was in the process of working the bugs out when this happened. And throwing money at this is no guarantee that it will work...
The good news is that when we got home tonight the water in the Kitchen was running so we can wash up a bit.
I noticed that everyone at the BBQ tonight sat down at the far end of the table from us....

I am surprised to LD. Don't know that much about it but I do love this Unix stuff. We are still using the same laptops from 2004/5.:lol I do know that windows can corrupt a mac in a dual platform setting on the newer units if you don't take the appropriate precautions but I don't believe that was dakar's issue.
Something to do with a formatting issue on an external drive that did not jive with her computer and it thumbed it's nose while she was working it out.

So did you send in the old MS formatted drive, or the Mac... or both? Do you have a PC still in the house that you can check the old drive on?
Sorry I did not see this.
The Mac is the one we are talking about. I have a call in but at this point have not heard from the Recovery man yet to see when to take it to him.:(
They (Mac Store)did all they could do to try to get the drive to show up. It was a :no go. The next step is to take the drive to someone that can figure out what part is keeping it from running fix it and off load as much info as can be got. That is if it is possible to do so...
Then the confuzer gets sent to Apple and a new drive gets installed. I only have to pay for the recovery part as it was up to me to make sure what I had was backed up.:owned I was trying to get that done with out spending money I don't have at this time by using a external USB drive I already have. Sad for me that the drive was formatted to my old laptop (that was crashing) and the Mac stuff was like Nut said thumbing it's nose at it when I tried to use it.
That said I have a friend that will take care of this for me when I get my Mac back. He is a IT Guru for IBM and the things he does with confuzers is really remarkable. WAAAAAY over my poor head!:lol
He said that he could configure it to all work in the background every time I just pluged it in and I would not have to worry about it...I like that!!!

OK I have to say that I never saw this coming and as such I am truly shocked. The generosity of the people in the close knit family we call TWF has humbled me greatly.
I am a person that will do what needs to be done. rAK and Nut needed help and I was in a position to help when they were having a bit of bad luck on their ride this summer. I never had a second thought when they asked. If I could not do it I know others I could have called on to do it. I don't help others wondering if I will get something back. That isn't how it works. I don't take money or gifts. I do take dinner however!:tongue
What I did get from helping was two more people I am proud to call Friends...
The bike world is small. A small group as far as the general population goes. There are those that you can't count on (as in anything) but for the largest part you can call and they will answer. I have seen this time after time in my 43 years of riding. I have seen money, time, sweat and even blood shed to help out a fellow rider.
I am in awe right now because not only have rAK & Nut helped me out but others here have been in contact with me to help me out too. I never intended it to happen this way. I was feeling like the seams were going to bust on me that day and I needed to let off a little steam. And what I got was so many positive thoughts that my downward slide has started to level off.
I want to say a heart felt thank you to all of you here at TWF. And know that if you ever need help I will be there. It's just how it is...

The call from the Data guy was not very hopeful. He said he was going to keep the HD spinning until Monday night, but at this point he had not gotten it to do much.:(
He said he was not going to give up until it was time...
On a different note our printer started to act up and then went totally on the fritz at which point it and I had an all out war and dang if it didn't win!
The good part was that a friend drove all the way out to our Farm picked me and my gear up and we went for a ride in his Ural sidecar rig.
WOOHOO!!!
Man did I need that!!!!
And when I got home tonight the road looked like I might be able to get out on the Dakar for a nice Sunday ride.
So now I am making Lemonade!
OK now before you ask me for pics LT I can't use the SOs confuzer to load up picks (long story:mad )so when I get my Mac back you can rag me all you want for pics and I will post them up then cause I know how much you need them!

I had to go to town and back.
Cold going up, strong winds about 40 mph.
Two hours later Blowing snow, slick as all getout and the wind almost took out a big truck I had just passed on the Highway.
We had two white out events that lasted about three miles at a time out on the Highway. That was fun! NOT!
The SO is still at work and is going to try to get home before the wind blows the snow a foot deep across the road to the farm. If that happens I have to break out the tractor and go get her...
All this and we only had about what maybe an inch? Sheesh, love the Great Plains...:lol :bs

sounds like the Lower Mainland....ask hijinxxx what she's done so far today!
here we usually have wet roads before it gets down to freezing, so all the prairie people think we are a bunch of wusses when we won't drive in it. it truly is selfpreservation here though, there are so many 4wheeling redneck wanna-be's that it is simply safer to stay off the roads.
oh yah all it takes is an inch.... we've had 4-6 here and more as you get closer to the city!! langley has 8??etc.

My Mac is back from the local Data guy. He was not able to do anything with the drive. :(
Now it is sitting in a shipping box with a label on it to be shipped to a place on the left coast to see if they can rebuild the broken drive and try to get the pics off of it.
They say they will charge me more money than I have a right to spend to TRY to get the pics off my dead hard drive. If they get everything off it is full price. If they get one pic it is one third the total price and goes on a sliding scale up to full price depending on how much they can save.
The lesson...BACK UP YOUR CONFUZER!!!!!
Do it often if not everyday.
Don't keep your copy in the same building as your confuzer. One word "Fire"
If you can, keep multiple copy's. Use a Zip drive, CDs or a USB HD.
For the money this could cost me I could buy 15 USB HDs!
We need a smilie banging its head on a wall...

OK so I got the call about my Mac that is in Calif getting all the data off the old drive.
No Go. All gone.
It's funny but walking around the Denver Swap Meet I had a premonition that it was gone for good. It gave me time to think things through. To see that it is not the end all I was feeling when it first happened. I was sad for about 20 minutes. Then my brother out of the blue said he was happy I came along for the ride. And it all just jelled...
I am more thankful for the time I have spent with my family and friends. All the pictures are gone but the feelings are still there. The rides are still the best rides I have ever had. The smiles I captured are still there in my head.
I will start out new. I will make sure I do what I can to keep the pics safer from here on out. I will do what I can to share the ones that are special to me with you all, my extended TWF Family. And with my gift from rAK and Nut it will be sooo much easer! (SmugMug)
The Mac will be back this week. I have an appointment with Apple Care to get a new HD put in. They do not know if they can do it in house or have to send it in tell they see it. That will be Saturday. So it looks like I might be back up and running next week. Maybe...
And as my day of riding was coming to an end I found myself grateful for just being alive.
Don't sweat the small stuff cause it's all small stuff...

Wait... I thought the hard drive just up and died when you tried to connect a PC formatted drive to the Mac? If you didn't drop it or shake it... or anything crazy like that while it was running, I don't understand how the plates could be scratched. Where did you send the drive for analysis?

My USB Drive never would talk to my Mac. I tried for a week kinda half a$$ed to get it to work. Then my Mac died when I tried to start it when I went to Latte Land to do some work. When it wouldn't turn on I rebooted 2 or 3 times.
The local guy also had a hard time getting it to spin up but he said it was a no go in the end. He never took it apart I found out. Just left it in the mac and tried to get it to work. Same thing Apple did.
The Drivesavers took it apart and said it was toast. They stood to make a bunch of money if they could have done it.
I found out that my old laptop corrupted my USB Drive and will not YET work with my Mac. I have a friend that is going to help me get my new drive up and running and he said he would reformat the USB Drive and it should then work...maybe.

Glad to hear it is back on it's way to you. Start fresh on the USB drive or get it formatted and working on a different mac before using it on yours. I would be reluctant to work with a USB drive that has given you trouble in the past. Especially this kind of trouble. FWIW,,,,you can get a 1GB mac compatible USB flash drive HERE (http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-SDCZ4-1024-A10-Retail-Package/dp/B0007TC39A) for 10 bucks and start out brand new. Thank you for the info Nut.
I already bought a new 8gig flash drive for $24 to do backups when on the road. The old drive will be reformatted by my friend that works for IBM and does this stuff in his sleep. I trust him to work this out before he puts it to work on my computer. (If I even do)
I also bought a USB 160GB drive to do a total back up when I am home. It is the one I bought and sent with the Mac to Driversavers to do the down load on it it had worked. He will set it up to run in the background every time I plug it in. No input from me.
My old drive was a 160GB and I already had it over half full. I have to run Windows XP on it because it runs my Garmin mapping software. Talk about a HD hog!:mad
I also lost all my music. That took up some space too. Not all of my older pics took up much room as it was such a hassle to work with them in XP that I just set my camera to the lowest setting and lived with that. Now I set the camera at full res and they tend to take up a bit more space. So having a full sized HD backup will be nice.
I look forward to using SmugMug too when I get my Mac back. I will feel even better that the pics are also someplace else. I have learned that you can't be too safe. I will be calling on rAK to help me learn how to get around the site!:happy

OK so the SO got sick coming home from work last Sat. I can see she is getting worse with every passing mile. Started looking green only around the gills but now is taking on a brighter shade all over... I drive faster and faster...
I slide up to the front door of the farm house and run to unlock the door for her and step aside...
She didn't make it....:mgbanghead
She spent the whole night sooo very sick. Temp over 100. Bad chills despite I had the stove raging. Did I mention I am a sympathetic barfer.... It was rough.
Funny how the animals know when your down. They hung around her the whole time. I fetched and cleaned. Forced her to drink fluids. She fought me every step.:catfight:
Monday morning came and she was still too sick to go to work. THAT went over well! She had to cancel a busy day of paying clients. She was not a happy camper.
My car has been back in the shop to fix the wrong head gasket that was installed. That was the reason for it poring oil everywhere I drove. Greg called Monday night and said it was done. I said I can't leave. He said he would bring it over for me. Cool! Oh and Greg can you stop by the grocery for me? Please?
We exchanged money, keys and groceries like we both had the plague. And soon enough I did...:(
So yesterday was really the first day I felt like I could get out and away from the house long enough that I would not regret it. If you follow my meaning...:D
So off I went to start the frozen car. It was COVERED in ice. So I opened the door and was hit with gas smell... Not a good sign. I started the car thinking that it might have been from Greg's shoes... Ok I was PRAYING it was from Greg's shoes. I let it run about 10 min and went to clean the ice off now that it was not like concrete. As I leaned over the hood I smelled it...Gas...:mgbanghead:mgbanghead:mgbanghead
Turned it off and started the warming process on the gas guzzling pile of a van.
Seems I made enough noise to wake the dead when I saw the gas leak and the SO came out to see what I was so happy about. (Thursday is her day off) If it had been summer flies would have landed in her open mouth. Mine was to busy being pissed for a fly to have gotten a chance.:nono:
So off I go to class. As I get into town I pass a Mexican restaurant and think Wow that sounds good! I had to laugh at that thought cause who when they are sick thinks of eating mexican food? OK well I don't!:p
I'm healed!:singingrain:
Class was great. I finally learned how to turn the dang thing on! Worked more with iPhoto. Some tricks on backing up my junk. And had a good time all around.:yahoo
When I got home I took the car over to Greg and he has it now so you all are stuck with me for a few more days...sorry...:D
