View Full Version : Opinions: Galfer SS Brake Line Issues

So about 6-7 months ago I had Galfer Stainless Steel brake lines installed. I had them professionally installed because the Galfer warranty basically said that if they aren't professionally installed then there is no warranty. Flash forward a few months and while I'm checking my front brake fluid, I notice this:

:(
Not good. So I snap a few pictures and email Galfer about the problem. While I'm waiting for a response (I had to email them multiple times) I shove the line back up into the fitting as best I can... and it just eventually drops right back down. Anyway, I finally got a response from Galfer today:
Hello my name is ****** after seeing the picture you send the line is not pulling apart from the fitting. what you can do is slide the outer coating back up to the fitting if you have any problems doing this feel free to give me a call.
So THAT is the official "fix"???? pushing it back up into the fitting (something I've already tried). Should I try to pursue this issue further, or drop it? Obviously they don't think it's an issue, but I paid over $100 for these brake lines, and I'm sort of irritated that I'm having any issues at all.

This is easy...
After I tell you this I will send you a bill for the service.
Make the Call...
Yes I am a smart a$$.:tongue
Call and tell them you have tried to do what they said to do and see what they say to do different. You have a warranty. Put them to the task.
I would not put up with shoddy looks on my BMW's just because I have a KLR budget!
(I am not referring to you being cheap! It's all about me!:tongue)

I agree that they should make good. You paid for working lines, but you also paid for the appearance. Even if there isn't a performance issue, there is an aesthetic issue and they owe you a fix.

Thanks guys...
I wasn't sure if I had a valid beef, or if I needed to call the

:lol
I don't necessarily need a whole new kit, I would be happy with a replacement line.
I guess I'll dust the cobwebs off the 'ol telephone and make a call :tongue

You might check with the place you had them installed, also, if it's convenient. They might have a quick fix.

If calling doesn't do anything... that will be Plan B... or will that be Plan C by then? :lol

The line isn't pulling from the fitting - it's the hose cover. This was one of the reasons i've been unhappy with galfer lines and now run Spieglers and Goodridge.
There is a member on the R1-forum who works for Galfer and he stands by the product and will replace a line for that type of issue in a heart beat.

I'm being ignored... no returned calls... no returned emails...
No more Galfer products for me.

Update: The line continues to fall further and further out of the housing, and after closer inspection further down the line, it's rubbing against the lower triple tree and has worn through the rubber coating and is working its way through the steel braiding :gaah:
I did a lot of research last night and discovered that the shop where I had them installed at did it wrong. One line is slightly longer than the other and they installed the longer line on the wrong caliper so the shorter one is too short for the side it's going to and is being pulled on too much... and it's pulled so tight that it's pulling out of the housing at the top, and rubbing against the tripple tree and wearing through the line.
So, this isn't a Galfer problem... it's a improper installation problem
I ordered new lines today. Goodridge lines this time... I still don't care for the lack of customer service I received from Galfer.
I'm uber pissed at the shop.... I would say I'm:  x 10
So now I'm wondering if I need to stop riding until it's fixed :cry1: ...or just keep an eye on it.

If the line pulls completly out you will lose the front brakes, without seeing it it's hard to say, use your own judgement.

As hard as it is not to ride when the weather is nice, the last thing you need is to get hurt. If it has gotten to the point of being an immanent safety issue, please choose safety. We don't want to lose you. :hug2:
