Anyone else have any pets? If so, what kinds?

At my house we have our own little zoo- We have:

Sadie- Border Collie mix (probably mix with Shiba Inu or Basenji)- She's my agility dog- or hopefully will be eventually. We're in training right now. I think she gets it more than I do!! She was a rescue- People who had her mom were going to drown the puppies at birth.

Baron- He's a black and tan Coonhound mix with probably something like a lab. He's our lazy guy. He pretty much just lays around the house. Also a rescue.

Garfield- she's my cat. Second one I ever had on my own. Also a rescue.

Sylvester- he's our cat. We got him because at the house he was living in, he was locked in the basement and not cared for. When we rescued him, he had a mat on his back that had been there for 6 months to a year. Had to have him knocked out and shaved.

We also have two fish tanks, one is almost empty right now, just has a couple bottom feeders. The other tank has 5 cichlids in it. Need to add more, but have to find some that are the right size.

So that's my little zoo. Let's hear about yours!

We would love to get a dog but between Nut being gone at least half the time, and me liking to be able to pick up and go whenever I want, it wouldn't be responsible for us to have a pet right now. It's tough enough having three girls!

This is our sweet 15 year old cat Bonnie. She surfs ADV a lot, but has been getting more and more interested in TWF as of late :happy

http://hayduke.smugmug.com/photos/231920055_eS7w5-M.jpg

We got Bonnie out of a box in front of wal-mart when she was just a kitten. Out of all the cats we've ever had, she is the sweetest, snuggliest, most well behaved of them all!

http://hayduke.smugmug.com/photos/116418097_2nrBr-M.jpg

This is Malo. He adopted us a few years ago. He sat outside our living room window and cried for a week. We tried to ignore him, thinking he belonged to one of the neighbors, but I finally couldn't take it anymore and when I saw him I realised he was starving - he was bone thin. We think he belonged to some people that lived down the street that we suspected were meth heads. They moved out about a month before he came crying at our house.

http://hayduke.smugmug.com/photos/116418117_oMfuE-M.jpg

Out of all the cats we've ever had he has been the biggest pain-in-arse! He beats up on little ol' Bonnie all the time, he has a habit of spraying in the house (he was banished from the house after his third time - he has since been let back in [it was too cold to leave him out] and has been good so far - knock on wood!), and he even beat me up once (almost ripped my ear off and put a few good puncture wounds in my head and face). He's much better then he used to be, but it's been a long hard road!

Well their is Maggie ( the boss and guardian of all of us) Border Collie Rescue She will be 12 in August)
Her half brother Fergus will be 9 this summer ( He is my boy... never far from me) We adopted them at the same time. The woman's livng stituation was about to change from 50 acres on a lake to a small apartment in the city She wanted the best for them so gave them up. Lucky for us because we wanted 2 and this way no adjustments they are best of friends.

Then there is Jax (9) He is a rescue. The farmer was going to distroy the litter. He is a good mouser and loves to cuddle but also if he gets to happy while you are petting him watch out he will bite the hand that feeds him
He won't sit still to have his nails clipped He is a PITA :mad But he thinks he is a dog and is right in the middle of things and of course Maggie loves to boss him around while Fergus gives him sloppy doggie kisses.
Luna Tique ( 9) also a rescue from the same farmer is the sweetest most loving cat I have ever had I can honestly say she needs me. and will lay right there while I clip her nails. Cause she is a good girl. Jt calls her " Little Rat Bas*ard"

I have a 55 gallon aquarium with 3 chiclids and a catfish.
and in the sunroom I have a pond with goldfish & Shubunkins

Outside I have about a pond stocked with large mouth bass
I will post pics of my house fish later

Jt calls he " Little Rat Bas*ard"

My best college bud in Louisiana is the only other person in the entire world I have ever heard use that expression. Now I know two!:happy Are you sure JT is not a Louisiana closet coonass or a Mississippi reformed redneck? :lol

J/k.....that brought back memories.

WowI am so sorry to hear that Queen. What a terrible thing to have happen. The death of a pet is so difficult as it is I can't not imagine how broken hearted you must have been to loose both of them in such a short period of time.
How old were they?

Here's my dog... but not really my dog anymore (the ex got the dog post-break up :()

Anyways, here is Ripley when she was a puppy

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2272/2261908212_275723e5df_o.jpg

Last time the ex went out of town on business, I got to babysit... we went to the park and she promptly found every mud puddle in the park :mad ohhh, the joys of owning a white dog. But revenge was mine when we got home and she went straight into the tub for a hose down:

"please mom... I'm not that dirty..."

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2370/2261910972_61c343e9a5.jpg

"you will pay for this later..."

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2414/2261909956_4bfeabc391_o.jpg

Here she is this past weekend after a visit to the groomers

We have two Miniature Schnauzers. The first one, Lancelot, we got as a puppy right after Unforgiven and I started living in sin :happy . He's eleven and completely house broken, the dog that is....http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh247/Maleficent_02/laughingsmiley-1.gif

Here's his baby pic

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh247/Maleficent_02/BabyLance.jpg

I'd always wanted to show dogs, so my friend taught me the ropes, the grooming, the handling, the traveling...the whole Westminster thing and we had a ball. The end result was my friend, Ginny put the final 'points' on him and got his championship since I couldn't get off work for the Kentucky circuit. I was lucky enough to put his International Championship on him myself as an owner/handler. Here's Lancelot's championship photo.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh247/Maleficent_02/LancelotChampion.jpg

We decided to pimp Lance out and he's fathered many pups. For one special litter we decided to keep a pup in exchange for the breeding fee. I don't have a pic handy, but he looks just like his dad and his name is Galahad. He's my little buddy and only showed him once. He seemed to be afraid of heights and wouldn't pose on the table for the judge so he's just my spoiled little guy. He is also very special as he was born on our wedding day at nearly the same time as the ceremony.

I http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh247/Maleficent_02/heart.gif my furry kids. Lance is eleven and Galahad is nine.

I had an uncle who used to have two Jack Russels. For a kid, they were the best dogs in the world. They never stopped going and were SO much fun to play with. In retrospect, the fact that that uncle and I are not close now may be related to the fact that I wound up the dogs and they would me up until we were a tornado of noise and feet and paws and bodies, and, you get the picture. ...but I had fun. :D:

He would ride in the hack (when I still had it), boat, truck, skid loader or what have you. He's alot more mellow than most Jacks and I think that is because we spend so much time together. my mom had to put my cat down today. she was almost 19 and had been living with mom since '92. crazy cat. disliked me so much that given the choice once of getting past me or 2 dogs, she chose the dogs. just hearing my voice in the house sent her running for cover. I went through the same thing when we had our chocolate lab, Bailey, put to sleep back in 2004. We got her when she was a year old and she lived to be 15 1/2. For about three weeks afterwards, I would sob uncontrollably whenever I thought of her, and even now I still tear up from time to time. She was the closest thing we had to a second child and losing her was just like losing a close family member. So while some might think it's strange, I think your grief is really quite natural. It will get easier.

Your horses are so pretty! I love to pet, bathe, curry, and feed horses but have zero desire to ride them...anything that big without a throttle scares me! :D:

Ah come on Queen...... after all it's only got 1 HP

I agree with you Gina .
People that do not have pets can't understand the bond. I have loved and lost a few over the years.
I still miss them.

We have a 4 year old Golden Retriver Mix, his name is Murphy. Hes from a shelter in Indiana. Hes is our perfect dog!! Then we just got a Terrier Mix named Jack. He is 12 weeks old right now. I think hes mixed with Bull Terrier and Border Collie. He is from a Tennesee shelter. Super cute, and learning to be a good pup.

I got home from work about midnight the other night and noticed another set of paws under the deck. We normally have 2 dogs, a golden retriever Angel (aka Princess Fuzzy Butt) and a ratt terrorist named Buddy. Living in the country people tend to just drop off their unwanted animals (as Dakar has mentioned) so we never know what is going to show up. Fortunately almost everything has been friendly. What appeared was the cutest little terrier mix. She was quite timid but friendly. I think she is young. Her ribs are showing.....and so is her belly. Yeppers, she is expecting. So now apparently I am also a home for pregnant teenagers. :) And she only has one eye. You know we are going to have to name her Lucky.........Pics and puppies to follow............

Well, I know this is an old post, but as a newbie on the forum I've been reading ride reports and gear reviews, etc. I just came across this one and it made me smile. You all have such gorgeous animals!! Though they are alot of work sometimes and sometimes lay the guilt trip on when I'm getting ready for a ride, I can't imagine life without my "furkids"!!

Yukon - the almost 3 yr old lab/german shepherd from the HS, and Mira my 3 1/2 yr old australian shepherd who was locked in a barn stall for the first 1 1/2 yrs of her life cause her original owners were tired of her herding - as a result she's a bit neurotic, but has come a long way in the time I've had her. Here are some pics - sorry about the size - .mac is making me irritated today!!

Wow, what a cutie!! He sure does look like my guy!! Yukon can successfully pass for a lab (sure does act like one) - he has different ears and a longer face though and he's a lanky skinny guy. Tell your daughter to prepare herself, I got Yuk from the humane society at 8 months old and he's as energetic and intense as he was then (maybe more)!! We started doing frisbee and agility to channel some of that, the nice thing is he's incredibly easy to train :D:

LT - 4500 miles wasn't too bad in the car with the yahoos - Yuk laid in the back chewing on a bone and Mira either slept on the front seat or surfed on the center console snerking her horrendous breath in my face. They had lots of fun hiking in Utah (~30miles), BLM land was nice - alot less restrictions. Hotels (which my sis and aunt insisted on - I was good with sleeping in the car), were umm...interesting as both dogs would alert bark at the slightest noise...arggghhh!! It was nice having company for the 15 hrs a day in the car - my sis and aunt were in a separate car.

Check out this website - theoasisofmysoul.com (http://www.twowheelfemales.com/forum/theoasisofmysoul.com) just found it the other day thought it was very neat (a guy's blog - been traveling around the country for 3 yrs w/his rescue pitty Spirit in a sidecar).

My boyfriend says he has a couple of customers that take their dogs on rides but they are smaller dogs. One of them rigged up the top case or something on one of the bigger Beemers with a little plastic bubble that the dog can stick his head up through and look out when it's cold. The guy who sold me my bike had a pic on his desk of his late Airedale with a bandana and doggles on, he had fashioned a dog trailer using a crate etc. to pull his guy around.

Dunno how you'd do it with a big dog without a sidecar or trailer, I hate being away from my pups but mine are too spazzy to sit still for any length of time!!

And LT you are right - 2 dogs is perfect and combined they do help push over the edge of crazy - especially with herding dogs as I'm you know well :D:

Pawprint2104 rides with her little companion Diesel

So there I am at Tres Pinos, talking with the other travelers as they fill their similarly empty tanks and I see this tiny, teacup of a fawn colored dog (if you could call it a dog!) darting in and out of traffic along Hwy 25/Airline Hwy. It had no collar or tags and its ribs looked like grandma’s old washboard.
http://www.twowheelfemales.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2151&thumb=1&d=1238048798 (http://www.twowheelfemales.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2151&d=1238048798)
Skinny and scared, it was unapproachable. It appeared hungry and ran from person to person as it begged for a morsel. It broke my heart watching that little guy, knowing it was future roadkill, I enticed it to follow me up a quieter street, then took a knee. It approached me, then placed its two tiny front paws on my thigh. I scooped it up and it licked my face as I walked into the store. As I entered, the clerk exclaimed, “Oh my god. How did you catch that dog. It’s been here for two days and nobody could catch it.” She gave me some beef jerky to feed the little guy. I spoke with another fellow, Bill (the fellow in the pic), a local with a HUGE heart. He told me he’d seen the dog running around, but couldn't catch it. I was very concerned he'd meet an untimely end running along the road. I looked around and didn’t see any “Lost dog” posters. I talked out loud about how I was going to stuff the dog in my jacket and attempt to make it home (two hours away in commute traffic). Bill saw my plight and said, “Wait a minute, maybe I can help.” He returned with a small dog carrier in hand and a bag of bungy cords. I had to re-pack all the schwag I bought along the way (biscotti, jam, nuts, etc.) My bike was already full of stuff, I really didn’t have room for a dog and a dog carrier. After we got it strapped to the back of my K1200GT,

I thanked Bill and headed home with my new navigator behind me. He did great! No whining, no barking. He just sat in the kennel like he’d been doing this his whole life. Zooming along the highway at breakneck speeds on the back of a motorcycle.

Boy was my husband surprised when I showed up with jam, preserves, an achy shoulder and a living, breathing, barking souvenir. Trying to decide on a name: Roadkill, Bott’s Dot, Beemer, Diesel. He seems to like Diesel, although we’re still not sure if we will keep him ;-p…

p.s. Since then, he moved to the tank, with a special tank bag and harness, been riding with me ever since.

So the topic caught my eye and made me remember a comment in my MSF course this previous wkend about people strapping their dogs to their bikes. Do people really do this? How exactly does this work? I couldn't imagine strapping a 100lb+ dog onto the back of bike.

Last weekend I met a local couple with a yellow lab at a bike gathering and wasn't sure on how they got the dog there, that is untill I saw them leave. The dog was in one of them double milk crates strapped to the back of her bike. What was even more supprising was that the dog was not tied in or restrained in any way. I guess if the bike went down (dog forbid) the dog would be thrown clear?? It would take me at least two rolls of duct tape to keep my little guy in one of thoes things!!

Oh my goodness LT, how did you ever remember that thread?

I think that was one of my first posts on this forum. Diesel and I have a blast on the road during our travels. We've been everywhere...to the dunes, the coast, dirt bike riding, Southern California, Yosemite, etc. He is still my best navigator and if it weren't for him I'd still be one hundred times lost!
The following posted for my own amusement...

Yeah, we've come a long way in our travels. I, really didn't think I would keep him. I had lots of interested friends. But, somehow, I just got stuck with him. Destiny, I guess. Yet, I wouldn't have it any other way. He's my fellow traveler. I wouldn't recommend this (riding with a dog) to anyone else. It just seems to work for us. With each ride, we continue to improve his safety harness and gear. Our safety is my first concern with him onboard. Our enjoyment is next on the list.

Great thread! Thanks for letting me indulge myself :ecstasy:

Here I found a photo ....from ..... 'In illo tempore' ....That was my HB with his vespa, the dog and me. I was sitting between the backpack and him.
Sad I do not have any of when I was riding to the market for my groceries and my dog sitting like she does here . The police could not believe what he saw!!!
Just good old memory....priceless!

1968 or 1969
http://gallery.me.com/nboonacker/100207/gora-20en-20verpa-3/web.jpg?ver=12514741210001

I am amazed on how we traveled on those days!!......and survived!!
Sandals, shorts.....no helmet!!

Notice the dog, her name 'GORA', now my license plate number. She had her tail tied up with a short leash to her collar so she was not dragging it over the road. We did hundreds of miles with her in Spain!

That is a great memory Abosit! Thanks for sharing the picture too! Gora looks gorgeous. I love shepherds.

When I learned to ride, ATGATT was what ever you found or was donated by another rider. After falling on the first day and skinning up my palms, my hay gloves were used, after serious mesquite thorns due wearing tennis shoes, the hiking boots were used, after getting choked using a helmet that was way too big, helmet fit became important... (not to mention the re-enforcement of using the helmet after smacking your head on rocks falling down mountain sides...) Yep - we learned by the school of hard knocks.

OMGoodness, Abosit! Great pic. :clapping: And, even greater story. I have to ask, did your beautiful GSD provide security for the Vespa as you shopped??? :):

Abosit
08-28-2009, 04:01 PM
Oh yes she was an amazing animal!
No leash used on her only to hold her tail, when someone wated to get near the vespa she would just look deep in the eyes and that what all was needed. She was protective of our property and us, but never to become dangerous to other people. Was great with our kids later on and she turned 11 1/2 years.

More important one day we had a flat tire on the interstate with fast traffic. We swirved from one lane to the other and made it finally to the side of the road. Not a single instance did she gave signs to jump off. That was a definite test for her! Apparently had full trust in the rider!

On cross country ( we took some donkey paths) it was good to have her in the front for equalizing the weight.
Oh yes, many stories the three of us on that two wheel 150 cc thing!

Letter to My Pets:

When I say to move, it means to go someplace else, not to switch positions
with each other so there are still two of you in my way.

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. All other
dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note that placing your paw
print in the middle of MY plate and food does not stake a claim making it
YOUR plate and food.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me
to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help in your quest to
reach the bottom first because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king-sized bed. I am very sorry about
this. Do not think that I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure
your comfort. Dogs and cats actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not
necessary to sleep perpendicular to one another, stretched out to the
fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and
having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but
animal sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some
miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not
necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob, or get your paw under
the edge of the door and try to pull it open. I must exit through the same
door I entered. Honest. Also, I have been using the bathroom by myself for
quite some time - canine or feline attendance is not mandatory.

I can't stress this one enough - kiss me, THEN go smell the other
dog's/cat's behind.

To pacify you, my dear companions, I have posted the following notice on
our front door:

Rules for Non-Pet Owners Who Visit and Complain About Our Pets

1. The pets live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the
furniture. (That's why it's call "fur"niture.)
3. To you, our pets are just animals. To us, they are adopted
sons/daughters who happen to be hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak
clearly.
4. Dogs and cats are better than kids because:
they don't ask for money all the time
they are easier to train
they usually come when called
they don't hang out with drug-using friends,
they don't need a gazillion dollars for a college education,
and if they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

It's my fault Mira was a mud monster, I shoulda known better than take the dogs to our favorite nature trail (which is by a river) 3 days after a bath. I can't get Yukon out of the river and Mira heads straight for the shoulder deep mud - guess who can never walk out of there dry?!? I guess I should be thankful that it wasn't something dead!! The first time I took Andy for a walk with the dogs out there, Mira found a rotten rabbit head and proceeded to scarf it down frantically (think ears dangling out of her mouth) while I was trying to pry her mouth open and get it away from her (with Andy gagging 50 ft down the trail).

LT, I've given up wipin' my pooches feet, and simply resort to always having a mop, floor cleaner and a bucket in the spare bathroom. I love the pawprints, but that's probably evident.

LRR, I'm a sucker for pits. My dearly departed red nose had the same smile after an hour's swimming in SF Bay. It warmed my heart looking at "fuzzbutt" wearing that big grin.

FF, your mixed bag of pooches are adorable. Clean, or otherwise!

Since we all seem to be so nuts about our pets, I thought I'd post this from an email I received earlier today. I can relate to one, or two, or three.... Enjoy!

If I Didn't Have a Dog... Or Cat......
I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety.
My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated.
All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture & cars would be free of hair.
When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like a kennel.
When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies
who beat me there.
I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable.
I would have money, & no guilt to go on a real vacation.
I would not be on a first-name basis with numerous veterinarians, as I put their yet unborn grandkids through college.
The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down, come, no, stay, & leave him/her/it ALONE.
My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers.
My house would not look like a day care center, with toys everywhere.
My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash.
I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L, F-R-I-S-B-E-E, W-A-L-K,, T-R-E-A-T, R-I-D-E,, GO
I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.
I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too
much.
I'd look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading 'mud' season.
I would not have to answer the question 'Why do you have so many animals?' from people
who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are loved unconditionally by
someone as close to an angel as they will ever get.

How EMPTY my life would be!!!

'Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened'
