Distination: Unkown :D:
Traveled 168 miles
Temp: mid 60's
We left around 11:30 heading South on RT #7 to Cobleskill. Then take RT #10N & North again on RT #165 bringing us into to the village of Cherry Valley.
History Lesson: In the early 18th century, Colonial settlers came to Cherry Valley establishing a little town nestled between steep hills near the site of an old English fort
Here is a cannon left over from that fort it even had a canon ball inside it.

During the American Revolution Indians led by their British allies massacred most of the population and it took many years for settlers to start moving back.

In 1799 the new Cherry Valley Turnpike which provided a direct route to Albany was established (now called State Rt #20. It remains one of the nations most scenic highways.) Before the construction of the NYS Thruway it was the main route connecting eastern and western New York cutting right through the rich farmlands of the "leatherstocking" Region.
The inspiration for James Fenimore Cooper to use as the romantic setting for many of his "Leatherstocking Tales"
Cherry Valley was also where Samuel F. B. Morse of Morse Code fame developed the first telegraph machine in 1837
Harriot Beecher Stowe visited in the 1870's She wrote a feature about the town for Harper's. The "Happy Valley". Apparently happiness throughtout the town was due to the fact that the village water supply was a natural source of "lithium :rofl:
We started our climb out of the village heading west on Rt 20. and south on Rt 80 This road follows the shore line of Otsego Lake (one of the finger lakes of NYS formed by the glacier) As you can see it is very narrow.

At the southern most point of Otsego Lake is Cooperstown Home to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
