Valentino Rossi secured pole position for Sunday's Indianapolis MotoGP after setting the fastest time in a fiercely- fought qualifying session on Saturday.
The championship leader came ahead of reigning world champion Casey Stoner for only his second pole of the season.
Spain's Jorge Lorenzo was third, with Americans Nicky Hayden and wild card Ben Spies finishing fourth and fifth.
Britain's James Toseland took 10th spot, just ahead of Tech 3 Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards.
Rossi rocketed his Fiat Yamaha around the famed Brickyard, home of the Indy 500 which is hosting its first motorcycle race since 1909, in one minute 40.776 seconds.
His time denied Australian Stoner his eighth consecutive pole position.
"I'm so happy because of the pole position that will remain as part of history forever and also because it represents a small advantage for me," said the Italian. http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/shared/img/o.gif
There are places to pass, especially turn one and turn 10, and the grip of the new asphalt is much better in the dry
Valentino Rossi
"For me as well it's good after having taken just one pole position this year until now. We did a good job and are quite fast with race tyres as well, but we are going to have to wait to see what the weather is like tomorrow."
Around 50,000 spectators turned out for qualifying, run in dry, sunny weather after heavy rain on Friday.
If the rain holds off on Sunday, Rossi believes the circuit, which includes sections of old track as well as new asphalt sections, will offer plenty of drama.
"There are places to pass, especially turn one and turn 10, and the grip of the new asphalt is much better in the dry," he said.
"If it's like this tomorrow, then we can have a great race. My target is to get on the podium."
Rossi, who has been in brilliant form since his victory at the US Grand Prix in Laguna Seca in July, is bidding for his fourth successive win He holds a 75-point lead over Stoner with five races to run.
Rossi can’t quite clinch the title on Sunday, but it is possible he could leave Indy with a 100-point lead over Stoner with four races to go. There is a maximum of 25 points available per race.
Weather could throw the event a curveball, as the rain that's left of Hurricane Ike is due to arrive in Indianapolis sometime Sunday. The 28-lap MotoGP race is set for 3 p.m. Eastern.

A little trivia
Loris Capirossi will be making his 169th start in MotoGP today, and at 35 is the old man of the sport.
But he doesn't feel like it, or ride like it, his Rizla Suzuki teammate said.
"He's still real fast, trust me," Chris Vermeulen said.
NickyHayden's helmet is a tribute to his favorite NFL team, the Indianapolis Colts.
"When I was a kid, I played Pop Warner football and I was a Colt, that was my team. It was me, my little brother and one of my best friends," he said. "(The) Colts have always been my favorite team. And the horseshoe, maybe I could do with a bit of good luck."

Good start from fifth the need for Spies at Indianapolis
Saturday, 13 September 2008
Ben Spies is ready to battle with the frontrunners at Indianapolis after qualifying fifth, but is depending on a good start in order to do so.
http://resources.motogp.com/files/images/xx/2008/MotoGP/Misc/non/231370_Ben+Spies+in+the+Rizla+Suzuki+garage-1280x960-sep13.jpg.preview.jpg (http://www.motogp.com/en/photos/2008/Ben+Spies+in+the+Rizla+Suzuki+garage+2)
Rizla Suzuki wildcard and three-time AMA Superbike champion Ben Spies will line up for his final MotoGP race of the 2008 season on Sunday, and will do so as the team´s highest placing rider.
With a last chance to show his worth on qualifying tyres at Indianapolis, Spies put himself on the second row for a career-best grid position, and is out for a good start in order to reap the benefits of his Saturday form and keep up with the MotoGP heavyweights looking to break away early.
`This was my goal; one of the front two rows for the race, wet or dry´ said the Texan after a clear afternoon session in stark contrast to Friday´s flooded runouts. `Now we have to get a good start and see if we can run with those guys at the front.´
Spies had high hopes for his home race, but confessed that he had his doubts as to what was possible in the face of such tough and experienced competition. He had the edge in track time at Indianapolis, having participated in a July test at the track, but admitted that any advantage had been eliminated already.
`I wasn´t sure if it was realistic or not, but with about fifteen minutes to go I knew how much effort I´d put in and where the times were. They were going to go quicker, but I knew that I also had quite a bit of time left in me. The qualifying tyres are still new to me, and there´s a lot in them,´ noted the 24 year-old.
`The difference between the track back at the test and now is night and day; the layout is the same but the speeds are totally different.´
Spies joins fellow countryman Nicky Hayden on the second row on Sunday, aiming as he did at Laguna Seca to finish the race as the highest placing American.

:wootrock:Yeah Rossi & Yeah High-speed!! Got the high-speed internet installed yesterday & got to watch the video! Not as high-speed as I want (is it ever???), but SOOOOO... much better than dial-up!
So Rossi can take the championship next race with a 4th place or better finish (if my addition is correct). He's just smoking things lately!
Has anyone heard if the 250 was ever run?

I was actually rooting for Hayden during the race. He did a great job, just couldn't maintain it with the soft tires. Have no idea how they stay on those bikes in those conditions! I was amazed that there were NO crashes! Wow.
