One of our top motorcycle mechanics in the Bay Area, Alan from Sportbike Dynamics (Petaluma, Ca), allowed permission to post up his invaluable 'how to':

"Girls- Have you ever considered shaving your.....

...seat foam to make the ride height of your tall bike more comfortable? There have been quite a few posts lately about lowering bikes by mucking with the suspension. This can create serious handling problems. You don't have to put up with a tall saddle anymore. By making the seat just a bit shorter, you can touch the ground WAY easier. This is how it's done:

The subject bike is a 2005 Yamaha FZ6. This rider loves her new bike but has to tippytoe her way at intersections and when stopped..."

Will do. Of course, if the weather's good, the mod could get delayed a bit.:)

I have to tippy toe a bit but I got a low profile gel seat and that helps too. The gel gives a little bit and its SUPER comfy when you are riding all day long!!!

So the seat I ordered was the wrong one, sent it back, & ordered a stock seat that was already lower. It's working fabulous, and has added tons to my confidence in slippery situations. I'm considering inserting a piece of hi-density foam in my sit-bone area, but haven't had the nerve to cut into my new seat. Maybe I'll be more motivated after my 1st 6 hour day - assuming my sit-bones get tortured.

They said the seat was 10 mm lower (less than 1/2 inch) than stock, but it feels much lower. I think it's cause it's also narrower on the sides. I went from mostly toes to squarely on the balls of my feet. Made a huge difference in how secure I feel.
