Up and coming American racer Elena Myers, 15, has become the first female rider selected to race in the prestigious Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup for 2009. After a very successful rookie 2008 season of racing 600cc machinery for Team Green Kawasaki, Elena now looks forward to returning to the smaller two-stroke GP machines; she made her 125cc race-winning debut at Portland International Raceway just four years ago.

Elena had this to say: "What can I say, other than it's an honor to have been selected for the Red Bull Rookies Cup. I had a great '08 season on the 600s and managed to get a few wins and a bunch of podiums in the WERA West and WERA National Challenge Series. I really love the 600s and they've taught me a lot but it's always been my goal to make it to the GPs some day and getting back on the smaller bike with what I know now will hopefully put me where I need to be."

Elena went on to add, "After seeing how the Red Bull program was run last year with the AMA and what it's done for lots of my friends, I couldn't wait to try out for '09! I know it's gonna be tough with all the competition but I'm ready for the challenge! I've been training real hard and riding as much as I can. This is a chance of a lifetime so I really want to thank the Red Bull staff for giving me this opportunity and also to Kawasaki for believing in and working with me these past couple of years. See you all at the AMA races next year!"

RED BULL DROPS US ROOKIE CUP SERIES!
by staff
Thursday, January 15, 2009

This just in from Red Bull:

Tough decisions in response to a harsh reality.

Red Bull has taken the decision to trim the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup to 8 races at 6 Grand Prix and cancel the 2009 Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup following a significant reduction of support by a major partner.

At a time when companies the world over are bracing themselves for the effects of recession Red Bull has shouldered as much of the load as possible to cover both the technical as well as operational efforts of running the MotoGP Cup but there will simply not be enough spares and technical support available to keep the U.S. series at a high level in 2009.

This is not a happy situation for anyone concerned. The positive is that the Rookies Cup will continue and the aim remains to give as many riders as possible the chance to progress towards the highest level of Grand Prix racing. Red Bull wished to thank Alpinestars and Dorna for their unwavering support in these difficult circumstances and deeply regrets the unavoidable disappointment that this brings, particularly to those involved in the U.S. Cup.

The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup now enters its third season and will be contested at the following Grands Prix:

May 2nd / 3rd Jerez - Spain (double header) May 30th Mugello - Italy June 27th Assen - Netherlands July 18th Sachsenring - Germany July 25th Donington - England August 15th /16th Brno - Czech Republic (double header)

Two pre season tests each lasting two days are planned.

March 26th - 27th Estoril - Portugal March 30th - 31st Jerez - Spain

I just read that Elana Meyers had not renewed her contract with Factory Kawi so that she could do the Rookies Cup. Hopefully that door will still be open to fall back on... :gaah:

Hopefully she can go back with them. It's sad that the economy is sucking wind so badly that they can't do this. So much for developing U.S. talent--especially female talent. :(:
