I did it! :ecstasy:

Earlier this year I got BC Predator exhaust put on Lubelle, and, since I was scared to mess with the carbs, I paid to have the pipes installed and the main jets changed to what conventional wisdom said was a good starting point. She's been running and sounding much better than she once did, :devillaugh: but I still think I'm a little lean on the main, and I knew I needed more fuel on the pilot.

There's a pilot screw that can be accessed w/out disassembling anything, and a pilot jet that's located under the float bowl. I had turned the screw out and still couldn't get the de-cel popping to go away. I decided to change the pilot jet from a 40 to a 42. I checked all the resources online, and found there are at least two ways of going about this - removing the carbs, or just removing the float bowls with the carbs still on the bike. Sounded a lot easier to leave the carbs on the bike, that's what I was shooting for.

The jets are tiny - and the pilots are longer than the mains.

First, I drained the carbs.

Then I removed the float bowls. When I had the main jets changed out I replaced the alum philips screws with stainless steel allen bolts so it went pretty smoothly, except for one bolt on the left-hand side that was a little persnickety. Then I realized I had an issue - there wasn't enough clearance to get any of my screwdrivers that would fit in the recessed hole that holds the pilot jet.

Here's a pic of the underside of the carbs from dinqua.com. The pilot jet is in the hole that between the two sides of the float, recessed about .75".

Ok, guess I'll have to take the carbs off. I remove the seat and the tank.

Start loosening things then realize I'm gonna have to move that airbox in order to get the carbs off. Nah, there's gotta be a better way. Hmm...:chin: I just need a better tool! And I have a hacksaw...

Voila! I now have a carb-tuning tool! :ecstasy:

Get the jets changed, everything back together, time to crank her up. Rev a few times... NO POPPING... :yahoo:

Next on the agenda - test ride. Inside, gear up, head out back... and... :wtf::badday:RAIN??!!!!!!! Check the weather map, on teensy dot of green, right over my house! Figures...

Oh well, gives me time to post these pics. And I think the raincloud has passed now... time for a RIDE!!

Test ride was !

I played w/ the pilot screw and think I have it set where I need it for now.

The constant annoying de-cel popping is gone - there are a few, quieter, pops that are probably normal for open pipes.

And she is quick from a stop now! Take off acceleration from stopped was a little sloppy, there was some hesitation, I had to wait for it to rev. Hesitation is GONE. :D: She's ready to go as soon as I am now, if not before!

We'll see how she does over the next few rides, I hope the weather stays mild. Then I think I want to go up on my main, from 130 to 135... gotta love the dark side...

Will keep you all posted!
