Fantastic Dakar, but I feel the need to correct you. You stated; "I was gone 2 1/2 months and went 19,177 miles, alone." Girl, you may have been by your self, but you were not "alone". ;):
Rock on girl!!

That was wonderful. There are so many long lonely miles when riding alone, but they are countered by the interesting ones, the people and things you see. You remind me that I must make time to go out on the road again soon.

I have to say you are very right Bro. I was never alone. I never feel alone when I am by myself. I find my head a fun place to be.
I was asked many, many times on this ride about what music did I listen to? Or didn't get boring out there? Or wasn't I lonely? The answer is I was never bored. There is so much to see. Even in the desert. Clouds, hills, buildings, birds and the ever present billboards to read!
And music? Well, I had an ipod but used it for recording me at the end of the day. The one time I did use it it was not working out for me and I pulled over and took it off. I like the sound of the road more than the sound of some band.

Please do! And If you find yourself out this way let me know. I have been known to go out of my way to have dinner more than once!
Thank you everyone for the nice complements. :redface1: This is a rough cut and I have more work to do to get it right. When I do I will post it up for you.

Very Nice! Glad I could help. What did you use to record? I took the GoPro Camera back as it was not working right and I felt there were better solutions. That video is very nice! Especially with the wide screen.

I loved the music too! I went and got my iPhone so I could use Shazam to tell me what it was (I love technology). Dakar, tell me if my iPhone is right...
Sacred Ground by
Craig Chaquico from the Panorama album and also available on, more appropriately named, Acoustic Highway.

That is correct. And it is the only piece I have by him. I will look and see if I can find the album. I just felt that it was 'right' for this piece.
I did not put much in as far as people go on this one. This was about the time on the road. I was hopping to instill in the viewer the enormity of the time and space of a my ride. But it's not like I have much footage of people either. Donald is not in it on our first ride together as I did not have the camera then. It was sad for me when I went through all the footage and knew that I had nothing before the BMWMOA Rally as that is where I got the camera. All I have before that time is stills.
As I dug deeper and deeper into the footage I was noticing that some things were not there. I got some help from the apple people and we can only figure out that I must have lost some footage either in the way I handled the save function on the camera. Or when I was saving from the camera to my confuzer in the beginning. I was having operator error a lot and lost some great footage. Anyway I look at it it is gone and can't be found.
I have 102 filmed events from my trip. Some from over an hour down to around 7 seconds. I have more work to do on this one and I have more stuff in the works. It takes me a very long time to do one like this. Each one will be very different from the last but they will only come out about every 3 months. If that!
My camera is a VIO (http://www.vio-pov.com/) I can mount it to a stem on a RAM Ball on my bike or put it on my helmet. Most of my footage was from the bike mount that is on my handlebars.

That is awesome! That is exact camera I am looking at buying now after returning the GoPro. Which camera lense do you have with it? Is it the 110 degree? The 170 on the GoPro was just too wide.

It is VIOs wide angle. It is the standerd one that comes with it. They now have the camera set up so you can use an 8GB card with it. :ecstasy:
You can put the camera on your helmet, the unit in your pocket turn it on and with a remote start and stop filming. I have my remote on my left grip so it is easy to get to. If you have it mounted on the bike you can see the video live on the screen as you film. I love it. If you mount the camera on your helmet you can put the built in mic inside your helmet and talk as you ride. :wootrock:
I can go on and on...

I like the loop feature I was reading about where you can setup a continous loop for a specific period of time like 5 minutes. When something interesting happens, you hit the tag button and it writes the last 5 minutes to the card. That is very cool. I'm about sold.

Yes, I can and I will be doing more of that as I learn about it. I have played with it some but don't like what came out so far. I have to remember Baby Steps!
A new version of imovie is coming out in 30 days and I got to see a preview of it yesterday. It will take me leap years ahead from what you have sean so far...:yahoo:
If I buy no tea at Latte Land for the next month I will be able to get it when it comes out.
I really do feel sad that I didn't have a video camera the whole time. The ride back with Donald was a special time for me and I only have some stills and what is in my leaky memory. For me that is sad. OK, so it is also a reason to come back out!
This has been a very big challenge for me to do. Being Drain Bamaged makes this hard to do but has allowed me to bring back such wonderful memories and special times I had out on my trip.
In going over and over the film and stills, it has helped me to reconnect with something I lost in the accident in 95. It is not the same but something close to the creative side I once was/am. At the same time it feels new and raw too. Totally different. I have to admit I am for the first time in a long time excited about this new medium.
I am glad to share it with you...

That is so wonderful. It refreshes my spirit just in the middle of the cold winter. Makes me want to ride.
When is the snow melting?????? I can't wait!!!
Now l have a question, if you make an iMovie and eventualy after all the next steps burn a DVD, what is the quality of the image on a TV screen.
I make slideshow-movie from my pictures and was thinking to insert some movie to that.
Therefore I wonder if the quality will be very different.

01-09-2009, 12:46 AM
The VIO shoots in 720 x 480 resolution and that is just down from DV resolution. So when I play it on my TV it looks great. But if your camera shoots lower than that it will not look as good the bigger your screen. The Vid you saw that I made was loaded onto Vimeo as a medium resolution and not as high as I can go with it because it is a rough cut. I still have work to do to it.
I am not really the one to answer this for you. I just started to play with this stuff. But I think you should try it if you already have a camera. What can you lose? And it might turn out GREAT!!!:wootrock:

Looked at the website for you helmet-cam and recorder, looks really good stuff, will have to somehow save and get one. So many times I was riding and was longing to record the ride, I enjoy watching my pictures in the winter and having movie is something much better.
Now planning for a long trip to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland next summer. Planning and looking where to go is part of my joy. Now also including a stop in Knox, NY -to get accointed there with one of the TWF on my Route!!;):
Can you notice I am having cabin fever already???

Abosit can your digital camera take video? My little point and shoot could and as long as I didn't zoom in it took good vids. I just held mine up like I was taking a pic and let her rip!
But it was only good tell you needed two hands on the handlebars!
The camera is a lot of money. I paid waaay less than they are asking for them now. But it still was not cheap. I just wanted something that could take the abuse that mother nature shells out on me during a ride and be a camera that could be upgraded as I went along. It used to be you could only use a 2GB card now it is up to 8GB! Now they have a 12 volt kit that I can plug into my bike or car. :wootrock:
I just really like the camera. Can you tell?

Thaks KCDakar , yes….. is this media so fun. Do they make also faster brain drives and expanded memory chips for our brains, uh, la, la then let us loose and do things!!!
Yes I have a nice point and shoot camera but have not dared to take pictures while riding, so less taking movie. I do not know how you get your gloves of, or even with gloves on, to take shots.
When I was 30 I could do multi tasking with no problems, still do with my feet on the ground but riding is something I am avoiding. Planning not to land on the ditches if at all possible. Healing takes longer they say, so way test it.
I was thinking sometime to hang my camera on my neck, but I evaluate the risk to fall and having a string around my neck choking me if I fall. These are all the things which go through my head.
I am not afraid of anything do not panic and instructor said to me I am fearless….. he is wrong I just evaluate what I can and what I should not do for my own possibilities. That was a sidestep!
So a camera attached to my bike is my choice. I have the 1200 GS with factory windshield and that would interfere with my existing the camera to shoot un-obstructed picture. I have an helmet-cam my son gave me last year. I have an old digital video camerawith a Lan connection which is very bulky and put it hanging from my neck inside my riding jacket. It works but is not something I would have constantly with me while riding. You never know when the best shot comes in adavance. So your solution is great.
About my trip! Carefull I ramble very easy and with my untraditional English….Oh well here it goes!
LT – my route was set in 2007, got postponed (very happily) because my sun decide to get married in the month we planned to go. In 2008 my sister came with family to visit from Europe, so another postponement again very happy and made some adjustments. They rented a motorhome in Vancouver and we drove the 2 bikes all along their trip. 6000 miles of fabulous trip!
So…!!!!!....this year is the year!
Itinerary:
Minneapolis to Thunder Bay, take most northern route Hwy11, along Long Lac, Hearst, Kapukasing, then hwy 117 through Val-D’Or to Montreal and Quebec. Then to Gaspe along the South shore on the St. Lawrence River/Bay, then to Moncton, visit Prince Edward Island very touristy have heard so stay very short), then to Sydney where we Take the ferry to Argentia overnight, ride all around Newfoundland and then back from Port-aux Basques back to Nova Scotia.
Visit that part and then to the southern part to Yarmouth where we take the ferry again to Bar Harbor(USA). From there somehow home. Will ride through NY state and Knox, if time permits (you know how the end of the trips go andhave not checked the map jet) and find out if LT is really a lunatique. Of course how should I know, we riders are all some kind of lunatics to others, only we do not see that right?
If any suggestions for our trip are welcome. (yes my old buddy from 38 yrs of marriage is riding too) Fuel is one of the things to consider. Not many gas stations between small towns and many other things.
