So the deal was that I called a get together for the ADV Crew from my area. Everyone brought something to eat and I grilled on the Barbie. Lots of food and GREAT friends showed up. After the food we got to the fun stuff and tore apart my Final Drive on the GS. Some of the pics were taken on my camera by my friend Lee and some of the pics I went and got from his SM account to help tell the story better.

After the food was polished off we went to work.

What do you mean it won't come off that way? Just take the blow torch and cut it off right there and it will be fine!

I think it was at this point I said something like Ah Shit....

The crap you see on the end there is about a 190 miles from the last oil change I did last week before I went to do the Kansas Tag. That is metal bits that should not be there...:baldy:

You have to heat the pivot pins as they have Red Loktite on them and heat is the only way to get them loose. That and a cheater bar! ;):

I know this looks bad but when done right there is no problem and it cleans right up. Done wrong and you have a very expensive paper weight.

Things got a little rough but no one was hurt during all this.

lowflyer never got his hands dirty but did a great job of taking almost all of the shots I have of this event. I went to looking for my camera and couldn't find it, I asked Lee if he knew where it was and he just smiled at me. We both have the same camera. He was using mine. Thank you for the great shots.:thumb:

And I'm here tearing my bike down not knowing what in the hell I'm doing? You need to come down here and help me with my project. It's nice and sunny here! Well, not for the next few days but it will be back.

Very cool though! Looks like you guys had a great time with a few chit moments thrown in. But doesn't always happen every time you pick up a tool? It does to me anyway.

Cool pics and story.. but where's the naughty pic?!? ;):

I chickened out and altered the pic. Unforgiven and I PMd back and forth last night and he thought it was apropos for the event but I felt chicken to post it up even when I said before hand that there was a naughty pic...:redface1:

Great report! Did you figure out where the metal bits were coming from? Was it the bearing again?

I can see some things that don't look right in the pics with both sides of the case. The gears don't look as they should but are not as bad as some I have seen. The small bearing is very sloppy and I see signs of wear. The Main bearing is still out of sight as I will not take it apart until it gets to the dealer to be disassembled. I will look at it then.

I am guessing that it will be totaled as any wear on the surface of the splines of the gears will just get worse as time goes by at a faster and faster rate. What rate? Who knows. I sure dont want to find out going down the road at the very conservative rate that I ride...:redface1:

The person I am taking this to is a BMW Certified Master Mechanic. There are only about 140 more or less of them in the US and we are very lucky to have one right here in my home area. We have talked about this and he understands that this is the bikes last chance. I have a rule. Three times and your out when it comes to something like this. I lose my trust in the bike. Need I say more?

After I get this one done I have to do the RT. And it feels worse than the GS.:cry1:

The first FD went at 64,000 I have about 81,000 I think now. I am not a number, milage keeper kinda person. I'm a ride, change the oil set the valves and go again kinda person.

Our BMW Club VP is pissed at me cause I never put in my miles. I always come up with some excuse. I find its just not important to me. I ride for the RIDE, for ME. I could have been the #1 rider this year in our club. But after doing it for the BMWMOA and getting beat by someone that rode a KTM a Suzuki and then happened to show up on a BMW at the rally and won. Well, I felt a little cheated... My hats off to him as he did have more miles than me. He just did it on three bikes and two of them were not BMWs.

Ok I'll crawl off my soapbox and shut up about it. I guess I still have not worked that out in my heart. I'll work on it...:redface1:

That might be true but I didn't want to show you the real side of me and you lose all respect you have for me as an Admin on TWF...

This might hurt...

I posted it then got to thinking that I might offend someone and as an Admin that is not what I want to do. I know I can't please everyone but I should at least try to set a good example.

Oh man this IS going to hurt...

I mean we do have rules around here. Like don't go off topic in someone else's thread. Don't poke fun at someone just because they need poking. Give your Bro a break every once in a while... Etc...

Get ready...

If I started to break the rules there is no telling where it would end.

I don't think anyone here has overly thin skin, or is easily offended by someone flying the bird, or off-color language. I think most of us are familiar with ADV, and a lot of us visit ADV frequently. That said, one of the most important things about TWF is that it is the classiest, friendliest biker forum on the net. I agree with Dakar that keeping that atmosphere is worth a little self-editing.

What's the expected lifetime of beemer final drives? I'm starting to think about the next bike purchase - even though it'll be a few years - leaning toward adventure or sport-touring, and I see all these folks go around the world on BMWs. But then I see/hear of these major reconstructions having to be done... pretty regularly?

What gives?

I guess it's all relative, 10's of thousands of miles is a lot for a bike. But I want to be able to put that kind of mileage on a bike, when I grow up. ;):

(Ok, maybe I redeemed myself a little, that's not REALLY ON-topic, just creeping back toward the fold)

We are glad you found us and stayed around to see just how much fun we can be!:worthy:

As to the Hack. It is a Russian Dnepr. Sounds like Neapper. It is a copy of a WWII BMW that was worked out as reparations from the war. They made more of them than BMW ever did. They started to come over here about 20 years ago and now Ural is the sole maker and importer of them after the USSR went capitalist. Dnepr never got the hang of it and they went under. :confused2:

I bought it from indianscout and I's Bro in Nebraska. He used it for a long time hauling his kids around.

I know I rattle on about my dog alot but anyone with a JRT usually does the about same. To say they have a personality is a grave understatement!! One can be a handfull, don't know how they do it with two!

Riding with a hack is a hoot! Dakar's Dnepr is a cool bike and had thought about buying it myself before I realised that I had too many bikes (like that is possable) and no place to store it. Not a fast bike but will go through just about anything you can put before it. Some of the places our brother had taken it would challange any two wheeled bike much less one with a hack. I can see a bike like that getting me into alot of trouble.....:chin:

So Tuesday was a windy but warm day and I was able to get out on the GS for her first maiden voyage after fixing the FD for the second time in a year.:riding:

On ADV we are playing a photo tag game in the Kansas City area and I knew where the tag was and thought I would go get it.:LT:

So I got as much done around the farm and went down and loaded up the GS and took off. I am on alert for anything not feeling right. The first thing I noted was that I had not checked the tires air pressure. My back tire was low. I hate it when I do that! :gaah:

I was going to do most of my riding off paved roads so I didn't worry to much about it. I got to the place I wanted to tag for the next tag and took a bunch of pics. The point of the tag is that you need to tag it by taking a pic of your bike in the shot. I had a malfunction with my up load to Smugmug and had already erased all the pics from my confuzer and camera card. So I didn't get a tag after all and it caused a stir on ADV so I pulled the tag and I am not going to play the game anymore but thought I would share the pic with you all anyway.

http://dakar.smugmug.com/photos/471497698_MCvUF-L.jpg

Then headed down the road to the tag I was after. So far so good. I was starting to think I had done ok with the install. About 45 miles of back roads to this place.

http://dakar.smugmug.com/photos/471498793_4CuZn-L.jpg

But when I went to do the tight turn to park I thought I heard a clicking sound. My heart stopped. I did it again then did it the other direction. Both the same.:mgbanghead::mgbanghead::mgbanghead:
Something was not right in the FD. Now what? Do I go home or limp into Engles to get it looked at? A tow was out at this point as no one was home to do it. As I was thinking this out I went and climbed the tower.

The veiw from the top looking south. That is KU up on the hill in the City of Lawrence Kansas.

http://dakar.smugmug.com/photos/471500193_67eHS-L.jpg

Long way down...
http://dakar.smugmug.com/photos/471500766_YemUB-L.jpg

http://dakar.smugmug.com/photos/471501262_N8jCZ-L.jpg

The hills were used as lookouts back before and during the Civil War. They could send signals from one tower to the next down the line all the way to town to let them know far in advance to get ready for an attack.

My heart was now beating from the climb and I had decided to ride to Engles or as far as I could, as the closer I got to KC the better the chance I had of getting a tow if I broke down. I got to Engles around 1:30 and they put me right in. Turns out that it takes a very special set of tools not listed (in any place that three people could see) in the manual to do ONE, only ONE of the two pivot pins that hold the FD on. That means the FD was not done right in Alaska either. I was on very borrowed time... The pin bearing on the left inside was shot and that was the reason I always felt that my tire was a little low or worn out when I was in a turn. Many people had checked this but it just was not felt until we took it apart and reinstalled it incorrect again! By then you could hear it.

Soooo with a lesson on how to do it RIGHT along with $176 more dollars I was golden and ready to get back home. A storm was coming and I needed to get home and batten down the hatches...

That bike looks naked without the side cases.

Yes and Yes.

I just don't have the cash to put out right now for the RT to find out. :cry1:

I also need to do the throwout bearing spline lube too. And that is a real PIA to do as you have to take it all the way down and pull the trany. Takes about 12 hours for me to do it. :mgbanghead:
