WARNING This link has some pictures that might be upsetting to children or people with weak stomachs.
I found this story on the AdvRider Website. I happen to ride all the time just wearing my jacket and a pair of jeans. I do have riding boots. But this story tells why we should all wear the right gear when we are riding our bikes.

and to think it would have been just a little oops if she had been riding in proper gear with knee protection
Some people learn better first hand ( I am not pointing a finger at anyone I crashed in jeans once a long, long time ago),
Please budget gear in when buying a bike
It has been said a million times and I quote:

Thanks for the reminder.
I appreciate the reminder, but I'm not looking. That stuff sticks in my mind and gives me nightmares.

That was the reason I put in the warning. I didn't want it to surprise anybody!
And yes it is a good reminder. But...OUCH...That had to hurt!

Sorry, I did not think about putting up a warning. I forget some people may be upset by seeing pictures of this kind.

Here in the bay area we call people who dont ride with gear "squids" I dont know where the term comes from, but seems fitting enough.
ATGATT = All the Gear, All the Time - no excuses. It is the first and last step in staying safe.
I think people who wear gear are more serious about motorcycles and can really appreciate what can happen on a bike - intended or not.

Squid
Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Imminently DeadSQUIrrely KiD
The origin was in the early 1980s. young sportbike riders that rode up in the canyons in California.
These guys were on 500 Interceptors and FJ600s. They would wrapped duck tape around their knees (no such thing as sliders on street leathers in those days) and riding these bikes as they were meant to be ridden.
Take a modern day 30 year old on a GSXR and full leathers and drop him back in time to that same place and he would be labled a super squid. Interesting how times have changed.

It is always good to post up these reminders, and I am with Inky, I don't look.
I think the tittle needs to have "ALL THE TIME" ADDED.
I have learned over the years that " It can't happen to me I am careful" is just a
false statement.
After reading what happen to Tyler I have even stopped behind cars before making a right turn.
I used to pull up the side to make the right if everyone was going straight or left not
anymore.

Took the DL1000 V-Strom off road - twice before successfully. Third time the charm. It was Badlands National Park. It was hot, so instead of the First Gear TPG pants, I had on the Draggin Jeans, First Gear jacket, leather gloves and full face Arai (which I adore), and my road boots.
Anyhooo.... hit the gravel, got into the tank slapper, aimed for the grass to the side of the road (go for the soft spot!). Crashed at about 20-25 MPH, face and front of body first. Left foot got hung up on the bike someplace. Results? Scratches in bike, helmet and face shield. One mild rash on my forearm, very bruised and sprained (doc confirmed not broken) foot and ankle, other bruises and such. Grass stains on the jeans - wish they had armor in them! No tears in the jacket and totally thankful for the boots - saved me a trip to the ER I am sure.
ATGATT for sure - no doubt I was able to finish the trip home because of it. I look like a dork most of the time (does anything fit anyone else??), sweat like a pig, have a continual bad hair day and seem to prance around in men's underclothing (under the gear), but will not ever, no not ever, ride in an unprepared manner.
Do yourself a favor and just wear it.

My SO suggested that I lose my jacket on our ride this afternoon. It was hot, and as he put it, "we only have a little ways to ride". I put on my jacket. It's the new mesh one, and about as cool as one can get in a jacket. I'm just too scared to ride without protection. I have visions of the road rash sans jacket, and it just ain't happening.

Good for you Gitana. You NEVER know when you will need it. Best to always keep it on. I just love my airflow jacket, and pants.

This weekend I saw 5 sport bike riders all in shorts and flip flops or sneakers. NY law mandates a helmet. I prayed for them.

We saw some squids Sunday heading towards a terrible wind/rain storm we had just passed through. I wonder how they handled it going from 95 to 65 degrees, in driving rain, with 45mph cross winds. No helmets, muscle shirts, no windshield in their bikes OMG I can only imagine.

I always wonder about the bikers in tshirts when I pass them going through some of the mountains we have around here - some of the bugs are BIG, and the grasshoppers PING off of my helmet and jacket - I hit one that was so big for a second I thought it was a hummingbird! But also a lot of people in less-than-full-face helmets wear kerchiefs around their mouths around here too, for just that reason.

 Yep - I wonder the same thing, even small rocks thrown up. Had some good pingers (I like that kari-star) this weekend. One small something did get down my jacket and bit me on the back. For the next couple hours I swear I could feel it crawling everywhere, including my boots.
Speaking of bugs, once riding my bicycle a bug hit me in the face, and the stinging was so bad I couldn't keep my eyes open without serious pain. I crashed in the middle of the road, and crawled pulling my bike with me to the side of the road. I feel very fortunate I wasn't run over. Absolutely no clue what kind of bug it was. Because of that I always wear sunglasses or clear glasses under my visor since I like to crack it open for ventilation when ever I can.

You know, If any of you are like my husband, he seems to attract birds! He had a robin bounce off his shoulder armour just last week. He didn't feel much, but saw the explosion of feathers. I cannot imagine what it would have felt like if he'd only been wearing a t-shirt!

It would of hurt like heck.
A roughed grouse hit me in my shin once decades ago. I had short boots on ( never will I ride in work boots again )
I want to tell you that black & blue lasted for months and the bump I still can kind of feel or at least I remember exactly where the son of a gun hit me. OUCH

Pinken, looking awesome! what kind of intercom/radio do you have on your helmet?
Pinken

The unit on the helmet is a Chatterbox set up. As we ride on separate bikes, this allows for bike to bike communication AND I can put in my iPod for music. I must say, they are indispensable for us! They range over a mile, so we can still chat if we get separated or if we are separately exploring a campground, for example. We usually do not "chit chat", but share information or plans. We even have a set up that uses the bikes battery to charge various items during the night or while we ride - neat, eh??
BTW - the photos is a few years old, and on my other bike - you know, the fast one! That trip was 4000 miles from Spokane to Iowa and back.
