Updated: AFM Will Try New, Female-Only Racing Class At Next Two Rounds

Mar 30, 2009,From a press release (http://www.roadracingworld.com/whatisapressrelease/) issued by AFM:

The AFM, American Federation of Motorcyclists, a non-profit, California-based road-racing organization with an illustrious fifty-five year history, is pleased to announce the creation of its newest racing class, Formula AFemme.

Formula AFemme is an all female racing class that is open to all AFM-licensed females with no displacement restriction. In 2009, Formula AFemme will be raced at Round 2 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, April 24th - 25th, and at Round 3, also at Infineon, May 23rd - 24th. Should the two debut races of Formula AFemme prove to be a success, the class will likely be continued for the remainder of the season, so please come out and show your support by racing or cheering on our racers.

The presence of women in sport motorcycling is on the rise, and the numbers of female racers entering the AFM have been increasing steadily in recent years. We believe the addition of this exciting all female racing class will encourage new female racers to try racing, generate positive publicity of Formula AFemme, and recognize the achievements of women who race motorcycles.

Fun! I've been wanting to see some women race. Anyone think they might be going in April? I might go since I have to be half-way down for a training on Sunday anyhow.

Something to think about....

Very good to hear. I hope it works out for the long run.

We have ladies that race here in the mid west region but not enough to make a grid.

For sure!

I'll be a lot more tempted to go if the weather lets me ride, but it has to stay reasonably dry for a week for that to happen, and that's a real crap shoot on the coast in April. We'll see!

Loudon Road Race Series here in New England does a women's only race a couple of times a year. It is limited to lightweight machines (no 600ss or up) and does not give points for finishers. It's more of a bragging right than anything. All of the women that ride in this race have a race license and compete with the guys in several different classes within LRRS. As KCDakar states above there are not enough women to make a grid each race weekend. Hopefully that will change in the future. :):

Here's some information on another women's series....2009 Women’s Cup Challenge (http://www.womenscup.ca/newsPages/2008/dec/1208_001.htm)!!!
