View Full Version : Arrgh! My baby is dripping oil...

Hubby notified me this evening when I got home from work, that there's oil dripping on the rear tire :mghissyfit: Could be the final drive, could be the transmission oil seal. It requires further investigation.
On the bright side, at least it's November, and riding season is mostly done for a few months. This would REALLY suck to have happened in say, May.

I'm sorry LL. I hope it is an easy fix and you are back out soon.

Well. Hubby has examined things more closely and pronounced that it is the transmission rear seal, not the final drive. Not a complex fix, but it will require taking off the back end of the bike get to it.
He's had his BMW apart not once, but THREE times (twice to swap out, then back in, the transmission, then to rebuild the engine when it lost its oil). He offered to do the fix. So glad this is November!! He can take his time... I'll only miss a few nice riding days.

What's the problem?? All of my bikes leak a little oil! But then they left the factory that way too so many decades ago. I tell everyone they are just oozing horse power or just marking it's territory like all bad dogs do. One ol' timer told me that is why they made saddle bags, one for extra oil and the other for floor dry!
All kidding aside LL, I too am glad it's not too serious and it can be fixed inhouse. I would rather find a problem at home than on the side of the road.
Perhaps you could do a report on the opperation and give us a few :LT: to go with it?? (I'm supprised LT didn't mention this. Are you slipping alittle bit on us LT?)

Hey!! Have you ever seen a Velo sump?? We park them over cookie sheets, if I am ever missing a pan I know where to look!!
Glad it is not so bad, and hope not to costly for you!!

Well, here's what my baby looks like right now (the "naked" white wheel on the right is the bent/cracked wheel from my "incident" with the landscaping timber).

the splines were a bit roughened up, but they cleaned up nicely.
Next: pulling the main seal for the transmission. . . :roflmao:as if I was doing the work.
SO SO grateful that hubby has had his bike apart like this more than twice.

It brings tears to my eyes:cry1: seeing a bike all disassembled like that.
:chin: I think the real challenge is not taken it apart but putting it all back together:lol:
I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad to hear your husband is handy with that part too LL :wootrock:

:): You can't see the collection of zip lock bags of small parts. Every one is labeled with what it goes to. I'm far too ADD to ever attempt this.
In fact, the first time he disassembled HIS bike like this (to remove the transmission to have it rebuilt), the sight so unnerved me that I had to leave town for the weekend... There was a rally in West Vigiinia I "needed" to attend.
I've gotten used to the "carnage" but it is still disconcerting.
As for pictures. I was lucky to get these. Chaz just wants to get the project done. I'll post what I can get.

Bungee cords and Tie-downs, ahhh the memories!
If that were me I would cover the intakes as, at least for me, I would find something to drop in one and ruin my whole day!

Well, the output seal has been replaced, and the transmission is back on. Hubby took pictures of the seal, etc.
It almost looks like a motorcycle again. But there's still a lot of assembly to do. We've had some warmish days here this past week. I've really been annoyed that I can't ride.

That is great news I look forward to seeing the transformation.

<sigh> Still no chance for a test ride. It seems the week after he finished is when the "Snowpocalypse" hit. We've still got piles of snow out front. Black ice hiding, snowy patches. Mounds of salt.
ICK ICK ICK!

Wow, glad everything except the weather has worked out for you! I was wondering what Gryndle's (spelling?) status was. Phew!
But the weather, well . . . that's another story.
