So I feel like a bit of a lurker since I don't have a lot to post! But I looked up the Team Oregon basic rider classes again and they are full up to mid February! Which I guess means if I want to take it any time early in the year I better sign up soon. Mostly I've just been waiting to make sure I will be able to leave the girls long enough to take the classes (breast feeding a baby doesn't lend itself to long periods away! gah).
So that's my only update. I am sooo excited to take the class. I still need to run by the DMV and get the book on motorcycle laws and stuff (and renew the registration on the car. yikes!) so I will have some reading up to do then.
I've been reading and learning here, though! :ecstasy:

Hi Loopy! Thanks for the update. Hope everybody is staying healthy and happy! Sign up for your class, you will so enjoy it. There are so many ways to take care of a breast feeding baby, especially when they are older and feed less often. Hopefully you have a network to help you with the girls. Over a period of a week before the class, freeze a days supply. Then while you are gone you will replace that during breaks at class. I am sure if you explain the situation, you can easily find time every few hours to express. You probably already know all this, but sometimes we feel we have to carry the world on our shoulders, and get into a thought process that only we can take the best care of our kids. We do need to let others help though. It is good for you, and good for the girls! It also builds your families community. All good things! OK - I will shut up now...

Loopy I can so relate! My rides have been from home to work (not even a 10 minute ride) and back for a quick 4 hour shift. Upon returning home to (normally) a screaming baby because she flat out refuses to take a bottle  Not that I am complaining too much but sometimes it would be nice to have some mommy time.
Hope you find a class and get in it. I enjoyed my class a ton!

Get in that class Loopy! February will be here before you know it! Actually that's only 2 months - a lot less wait than usual! I got the book then took the written test (for the Permit) at the DMV. It costs a little bit, but as I recall it wasn't much. It's just one less thing you HAVE to pass at the class, and ensures you'll be in the riding part. It wasn't terribly difficult, but there were a couple tricky questions. A couple careful read-throughs of the book got me through it (but have to caveat that with: I'm pretty good at taking tests).
Enjoy the baby & breastfeeding. What fun!

In the meantime, buy a copy of Dave Hough's excellent book, "Proficient Motorcycling". I read sections of it several times a year.

Also know even if you're not registered you can walk in on the first day of class and if someone doesn't show they'll let you fill the space...might be able to get in earlier that way. But for sure sign up soon. If the classes are full this time of year, then spring will be worse. Good Luck!

Best of luck to you! I can't relate since I don't have kids, but my comment would center around the fact that your investment in classes will have tons of pay-off for your family. Best of luck from someone who can't really understand!!! I had tons of fun and gained lots of confidence from classes. I want to take more.
Keep us informed of your progress. I'm awed by your many commitments.

Thanks everyone! Looks like the class counts are holding steady, but I'm gonna try to sign up in the next couple days. Maybe then they will let me walk on earlier. :)

Reba, Definitely try. When I took it, there was a guy who was begging me to trade my basic for his intermediate class. He'd signed up for the wrong class. I had my permit, so that's what I did. The bonus was I got to take the same class as my hubbie. There are usually a couple no-shows on Friday night class. Just go & wait it out. Good luck!

I finally signed up for February 19th-21st! Hubby ended up wanting to take it with me while he's home on R&R so he can have his insurance lowered... and now it looks like I might have to switch to the class the NEXT week since DH's time might be pushed back 5 days. grrrr. Ah well...

It will be a lot of fun. I hope the weather works out and you have sunny days! You can learn in rain, but sunshine sure adds to the fun. :):

Don't forget to dress for the weather! Not sure what the temperatures are likely to be out there in mid-February, but you'll spend a fair amount of time NOT moving around, either sitting and waiting on your motorcycle or standing and watching or discussing. Dress in layers, so you can adjust your comfort level.
Find out what sort of "gear" you need to wear. Usually the students are responsible for footwear (over the ankle sturdy shoes/boots), at the minimum with "loaner" gloves, eye protection and helmets available. The loaner gloves are gonna be one size fits all work gloves from the local hardware depot... too big for most women. And the eye protection will be those lovely glasses you'd wear in chemistry lab. If you've got any kind of leather full-finger glove that fits you, wear those. Your own sunglasses or prescription eye glasses should suffice for eye protection.
Check with the site before going with my suggestions. I don't want to get anyone in trouble.

When I took the class a kid had high top converse tennys, and they let him ride. :confused2:
I had some cheap hiking boots from big 5 ( I never used to wear boots, so I had to get something.) I had leather work gloves, but they were my own size. My own helmet. I can't remember if I had a MC jacket, or just a denim jacket.
Definitely dress in layers, and be ready to ride in rain if it occurs. They ride rain or shine. Don't be late. They're picky about that. Be prepared to be exhausted, but know that you'll have a blast. Oh and bring a snack to munch on during the breaks. Makes for a nice energy boost.
Yep - You're gonna have fun! :riding:
