I got hooked on motorcycling as a small (read short still am) kid. My father rode both street and cross country as it was called at the time (about 30 years ago). He used to take us, my brother and I, for rides around the country block on his Harley as well as taking us to some of his races. He never got exceptionally good but always had a great time and so did I. When I was a almost a teen he was going to get me my first bike but Mom nixed the idea, sigh. Finally got my first bike in the early 90s, unfortunately several years after my Dad died from complications after being broadsided by a large car. He survived several years but they never got rid of the infection that took hold in what was left of his leg. They eventually realized it was the then 'new' disease call HIV. It finally got the best of him in the form of stomach cancer in 1989.
He is with me to this day however, all I need to do to feel his presence is hop on Guthrun, my 750 Vulcan, and there he is hovering just out of sight in my mind.
I don't ride as often as I would like. I won't ride impaired and in my case I am impaired by depression more often then I would like. When work no longer interfers with living I intend to ride more and farther. Time and money are the current major flaws in my life. I work to survive and don't have time to thrive.
All in all though things are very slowly improving with the, still too frequent, but not as frequent as 10 years ago, two steps back not causing as much or as deep a funk as they could.
