Kind of a nifty tool for helping with chain/wheel cleaning & maintenance: Wheel Jockey (http://www.wheeljockey.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=53)

that is nifty, and small enough to be a good addition to ones tool pack.

I 'll just keep using my center stand :D:

I actually don't think $54 is a bad price.

I don't need one since I have a center stand, and a scottoiler.... but if I didn't have a center stand I would certainly buy one.

I helped several riders on my trip lubricate their chains. It's a PITA to try and do by yourself if you don't have a center stand on your bike.

I have a center stand but my bike is lowered so it's hard to get up on the stand and when it's up I have to take all the luggage off to get the rear wheel off the ground, so it would help me.

I saw this posted on another board and other folks shared links to less expensive similar tools. If anyone is interested I can dig up the links.

Seriously LD I agree with you $54 isn't really a bad price but since ,I have never owned a bike that didn't have a center stand I just have no need for one . :D:

That was my first thought also but I guess when you look at the volume of units they probably sell, you need a pretty good markup to make any money. After looking at it though, I'm guessing I could make one for a lot less. It wouldn't be as pretty but it would work.

Here is the Harbor Freight version for $29 - although I just saw it advertised in the back of one of my magazines for $19, so maybe they do specials. It does not look as portable as the originally posted one... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=98800

Here is the New Enough version for $41. http://www.newenoughhp.com/track_garage/motorcycle_stands__lifts/hardline_products/sportbike_motorcycle_wheel_cleaning_stand.html

Carry a 2x4 or two and ride your front tire up on it/them and you will have enough extra hight to use your center stand easier.

I have used a rock before but I don't always ride where rocks can be found.

Yep, a 2x4 cut 4 or 5 inches long and can be thrown in the bottom of your pannier, tank bag or what ever. I have had them in the past and used it for a hammer and a cutting board too. :D:

I do carry a small piece of 2x4 in my side case but a roller would be handy for chain lubing so I wouldn't have to pull the side cases off.

Get a chain oiler like LD has. It's the bomb!

I went ahead and bought a wheel jockey this year, specifically because if I really commute every day in the summer that'll be 500 miles a week, which means chain oiling CONSTANTLY. The wheel jockey is surprisingly heavy, but quite small. I used it today for the first time and it is AMAZING. seriously. it was SO EASY to oil my chain - I just popped the rear tire up onto the bike and was able to spin the tire with my hand as I sprayed the lube.

Afterwards you just roll right off of the wheel jockey - see how small it is?

I know many of you have center stands or scottoilers - but this is a tool that both my partner and I can use, and it will make me a thousand times more likely to actually perform proper chain maintenance as recommended. I think that to that respect, it's a pretty economical solution.

Very nice especially if it will insure proper chain maintainance/:perfect10:

Since I have a center stand on both the Ninja and the KLR. JT has one on the Wee This is a cool item but not on my list of must haves. :D:

I like that a lot. My bike has a center stand, but since lowering the bike, and not lowering the center stand, I can't get the bike on to it. Nut just muscles it up there. Something like this for me, especially on the road would be very nice to have.

they have adjustable kickstands (for all the lowered bikes out there now...)

wonder if they have an adjustable centerstand ?

if not....?.... have you considered having a welder adjust the length for you ?

ridingAK
05-04-2010, 09:45 AM
I haven't really worried about it since most of my maintenance I can do when Nut is around, the biggest thing is oiling my chain. That can be a nuisance, but nothing I haven't been able to deal with. I am interested in getting the wheel jockey though since it would make things easier.

500 miles a week! I am impressed girl!

How much does it weigh? Would it be practical to carry with you?

kari-star
05-04-2010, 09:43 PM
it weighs 1.5 lbs, according to my handy kitchen scale. it's heavy, but it's really small so I think it will be practical to bring with!

yeah, let me tell you: that 500 miles/week is SO MUCH BETTER on a motorcycle than in a car!

I wanted one to use at home so being a cheap KLR rider I bought the Harbor Freight on especially when I saw the $10 off coupon. The local store didn't have it in stock and didn't know when they would be getting them in so I ordered it online and burned up most of my savings on shipping.

A little overkill on the shipping box.

I pulled out my wheel jockey yesterday after a too-short ride and did my first chain maintenance of the year!

I wanted to update this thread even though I don't have any pics hmmm mebbe should do a photo-tutorial for how I do chain maintenance?) because it was SO FAST AND EASY.

The wheel jockey (and the other cheaper tools in this thread) makes it easy for me to sit on the ground next to my rear wheel, spray on the cleaner, scrub and remove, and rotate the chain. I got the whole chain cleaned and then lubed in about 15 min. it was great!

we don't have center stands on any of our motorcycles (2 of which have chains) so something like this makes it much more pleasant to take care of necessary routine maintenance.

(ok, having a beer while doing this maintenance made it much more pleasant as well. and I PUSHED the bike into the shed after I was done.)

KK - how do you like the harbor freight version?

Kari- I'd like to see a photo tutorial too: Paul's bike has a chain, and after watching him struggle to clean and oil the Virago, I'd like to be able to suggest something better for his new bike. and it needs it too.

I have the Harbor Freight version also. It helps me since we didn't shorten the center stand when we lowered my bike. Nut just picks my bike up to put it on the center stand, but even with hours in the gym, that feat is beyond me! With this, I can roll the bike on and, as Kari says, sit on the ground and turn the back wheel.

If I get home before dark sometime this week I will go ahead and do a faux cleaning so I can tutorial it up! otherwise y'all will have to wait for a couple of thousand miles... and while the weather is nice enough that I'm riding every day I can to/from work, I don't want to make you wait for 2 weeks! :):

here is a sneak preview: I use the grunge brush (reviewed here on webbikeworld (http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/motorcycle-chain-lube/)) and these DuPont degreaser and teflon lube products (http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/dupont-motorcycle-degreaser/) (also webbikeworld)
