Ran accross this and thought I would share,
personally I like a little febreeze. During summer I like a bandana or Schampa CoolSkin or Sliks skull cap.
I think the next time I clean mine I just may use the dishwasher and laundry soap, I bet that will work out great.

I take out all removable pads and wash them with mild dish soap, letting them soak both with the soap and then after a good rinse, to make sure all the soap is out.

Then again, I don't have to wash it very often since it doesn't get very hot here that often.

I think it helps to store your helmet properly too. I've got mine on a metal rack shelving unit. It seems to keep the funk out pretty well when riding in the rain all the time.
