View Full Version : Free Medical ID cards

With all of the accidents we’re hearing about lately, it brings to mind, “What if it happens to me?” It's one thing if you’re involved in an accident, and have friends with you. However what if something happens and you are alone? What if you are unable to respond or give any info to the police or rescue? Your Driver’s License and insurance card only provide a limited amount of information, and while many of us have “ICE’d” our phones, that’s still not always enough.
We found a site that will let you create a free medical ID card, with your basic info, Physician’s phone #, and any allergies or specific medical issues.
http://www.medids.com/free-id.php
Mine is sitting on my desk as we speak, awaiting the laminating machine to warm up. I actually think TWO copies of the card might be good -- one in wallet/tank bag/bike trunk (wherever you keep your other info) and one in the inside jacket pocket of our riding jackets.
You might also want to consider this: the last portion, where you can add additional info (and it defaults to "I give consent to medical treatment") I've put in -
"Do not remove helmet
until seen by medical
professionals."

Very great idea. One of my buddies actually went so far as to put in small vinyl on his helmet "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY DO NOT REMOVE HELMET" It's the tiniest details that can make the BIGGEST difference! GREAT POST!! THANKS!

We have the "do not remove helmet" reflective decals on our lids, and I also just found (someone sent me the link -- I'll have to post it up) these teensy vinyl pouches that stick to the inside or outside of your helmet, with all the same emergency info. I figure, in the event of a crash, if you're non-responsive, the easier it is for emergency personnel to locate your information, the better!

And for the non financially challenged these seem to be a good idea as well.
Easy to see too.

My mom MADE me get an emergency card (i made one) when I first started riding. It just makes sense. But then... it makes sense to have one even in the car. You just never know what's going to happen and the more info the emergency team has... the better they can help.
Thanks for the link. This'll look MUCH better than the shoddy one I made. :)

Well, anyone who'd be on my emergency list will be on my cell phone but I've seen cell phones experience a lot of damage that results in not working. I'm not sure I'd want to trust an electronic device to remain intact during a crash which in my case will probably involve a car (again). Also, I think it's pretty important to have a list of allergies. I'm allergic to a long list of antibiotics AND latex. I think it's safer to have a card.

I've also heard of people putting emergency contact information in their cell phone contacts list.
Over here in UK there was a big push a couple of years ago to use ICE as a contact name on your mobile
I n
C ase of
E mergency
I have 2 of these set up on my phone ICE1 ,ICE2 with mobile number, name & relation to me.
Although I accept that mobiles won't always survive an accident-it is an easy way to contact someone if something does happen.
I was part of a group a couple of years ago on holiday abroad where there was a fatal bike accident where I lost a biking friend & it did bring home that although a lot of us had been on many biking trips together through Triumph we didn't actually know much about each others families, as we only met up once or twice a year & then the talk was always about bikes!

My new phone (LG DARE) actually has an ICE contact information and "notes" section already built in. It's pretty cool, I have three contacts and plenty of room for medictaions, allergies......

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I was told
First of all in a crash your phone can get broken so all the contact info and medical history would not available. and or does the person helping you know how to use your model phone ( losing valuable time researching something that may or may not be there )
Second anything not attached to you is useless. The people racing to your aid will not go to your bike which many times can be a distance away to look for something that may or may not be there.
Third if it is in your wallet or a pocket of your jacket Forget it They are not going to to find it.
It must be attached to you for it to have any value the perfect place is your jacket or helmet because the Paramedics are going to be looking at you and they will spot it right away.

I tend to do things a little redundant. :redface1:
I have an ID Tag on all my helmets. Thank you LT.:worthy:
I have ICE in my phone and my phone is always on me in my Jacket. Never in my tank bag. I feel it has a better chance of being safer on my person and being found by Medics that way. And if I can get to it but my bike is down the road then it is better to be with me in my opinion.
I have a set of papers in my panner that is in a bag marked as ICE in red that has a list of all my info and medical directives in it. On my Alaska trip I had two. One on me and one in the pannier.
More than any of this my biggest fear is that someone will go to remove my Modular Helmet without knowing what they are doing and try to pull it off like a regular full face helmet. I have seen it done...:nono:

DANNGGG! Now if that is not covering your bases then I don't know what is.
Based on this, I just added ICE to my phone to go along with the other stuff.

Thanks for the info. Never though of getting medical ID's and also putting Don't remove helmet in them. I have information on my cell phone, but cell phones can be severely damage during an accident, as stated earlier. Thanks again

Wow...just call me Clueless...I never would have thought about putting a sticker on my helmet about not removing it in an accident. I've got an ICE card and thought of putting it on my tank bag (of course thinking and doing are soooo different) but now I understand and totally agree that nobody will be looking on my tankbag!
I'd really like to take that accident scene course and Demenshea reminded me of it in her review of the AMA event in Colorado (again, such the "thinker" I am lately....).
LT you are right up there in the most awesome person in the whole world catagory....YES, I'd love a helmet sticker and will PM you right away :D:
Very informative thread!

These are really cool...good idea on the helmet thing. I'm all about redundancy like KC and like the idea of multiple cards/sources of info. In addition to these I always travel with a dog tag style ID tag around my neck (though I suppose you could wear it as a zipper pull etc.). You can have these made at your local Army Surplus store or you can find them for 5 bucks on Ebay printed up for you. This is something I've worn since I did a lot of training for Mt. Bike racing. Besides all the valuable medical information, I just never want to be a Jane Doe. I've seen way too many tubes come through with Jane/John Doe in my years working in a lab, makes me sad.
