View Full Version : What do you do with your helmet when you go inside?

Do you take it with you, put it in a helmet backpack or leave it with your bike? I'm starting college in a week and don't think I will want to haul my helmet around too much. Thanks.

I have a "hat box" on the back of my DRZ:

when I get to work I pop the top case open, grab my canvas tote full of work clothes, stick the helmet in, and walk straight in to change.
if it's good weather and I'm just inside for a short period of time I just leave it on the mirror.
most bikes have those helmet locks on the side, but I am really bad at getting them to work!

I usually carry mine, but I can see why carrying it from class to class would be a pain. If you don't have a case it will fit into is there a place on campus you could leave it? Admittedly I went to a small college, University of Alaska-Fairbanks, but the department head's secretary let me keep a bag in her office when I had evening classes and was working nightshift for security.

There's no where I can really leave it, but I can lock the helmet strap under the seat. That's probably what I will end up doing unless there's a day that it rains. Then I'll probably just take it in with me. Thanks for the advice.

I have a Givi E52 on that back of my bike so most of the time I lock both mine and my sons helmet in it. I can not tell you how much a set of even small bags and a LARGE trunk can improve the versatility of your bike. I do not know where you live or the school that you are going to but if you are not 100% comfortable then you can also get a small cable and a good pad lock and run it through the chin guard and around a pice of the frame to make it harder for them to take

I usually carry it with me or lock it under the seat like you mentioned.

I do the FJRider method - cable lock through the face opening and around part of the frame.

11 years, don't lock it unless I'm in the city

When I ride to work I am able to leave it on top of our lockers .I don't yet have saddlebags for my Bike but I think it will be my first accessory.

I just hook it on the bike, however if I am at someplace I may worry I will take the fullface( Nolan Modular) in with me but if it is my Carbon Fiber it fits in my bag.

I prefer to take it inside if I can. Helps keep it cool for when I put it back on and gives me a chance to clean it up a bit. Otherwise, I just hang it somewhere on the bike.

If it is cold out I take it inside. If not I lock it on the bike. I have had helmets stolen when they were not locked on the bike.

It depends on where I am but most of the time I leave it on the bike.

I carry mine most of the time. If I'm on the Dakar and have an empty pannier, I'll throw it in there.
My friend has one a PacSafe helmet bag that is waterproof would be hard to steal:

I will probably pick one up at some point if I can find one on sale. If I needed one like you did, I might consider footing the bill for it. Seems like cheap insurance and protection for a helmet. Just make sure to note the dimensions to make sure your particular helmet will fit!

I used to ride my bike into college in Manhattan, I always brought it around with me. I have one of those Icon backpacks that you could strap your helmet onto. I have a irrational fear of someone peeing in my helmet if I strap it to my bike (there are odd people in the city!)
Plus if you park your bike with helmet in the same place, everyday, people start to dream up bad ideas.

If your bike doesn't have a helmet lock you can add one - I have a dual helmet lock on my license plate frame from twisted throttle:
http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/3864
mostly I put my helmet in my givi top case but when it's full of crap the helmet lock is handy.

My question is... what are you going to do with the rest of your gear too?
Most campuses have lockers that you can rent for a few $$ a semester. See if they are wide enough to accommodate your helmet along with your other stuff and try to find one that is semi-close to most of your classes or at least to the 1st class of the day. That's what Kit does. If not, get a large enough carabiner and loop it on your helmet and to your backpack. Take it with you. They aren't that heavy compared to books. :D:

Ebags has that pacsafe helmet bag for 47.99 right now. Best price I saw. Just sayin'. Not trying to encourage anyone to buy more farkles or anything since we don't do that kind of thing on here.

It depends on where we are at the time. Most time we leave them on the bikes, but if it looks like weather is moving in or just looks like a rough area we carry then in with us.

Depends on what you are willing to do without if it gets stolen. Riding w/o a helmet is not an option for me. I do have a helmet lock on my bike that the strap goes through. But, I rarely use it as I have a friend that someone cut the strap and stole their helmet. I have the cable that goes through the helmet opening, which is much more secure. Sit the helmet on the ground so as not to get rained in if the skies open up. One can also use this cable to go through the arm of a jacket or leg of pants - the cable can loop under the seat. I have used the cable for all and managed to get friend's hooked up with it also. I have another friend that left their gloves on their bike seat at a Rally and they got stolen. Bottom line, if you aren't willing to do w/o, lock it up no matter where you are as there are never any guarantees.

If I'm in Sonoma...I just hang it on the mirror. But when I go to work in Sausalito I take my helmet in with me (and all my other gear on my body) It's nice to clean my face shield and scrap off any carnage. I like the dual lock idea, seems practical. At races I've seen many bikers use the cable through the sleeves of their jackets/suites and helmets

My helmet is "personalized" - gotta dig up a pic - with Scotchlite flower cut outs (I've got a die cutter from my Girl Scout leader days). I don't think anybody would dare steal it. But I still use one of those cables susieq recommends, if I'm gonna be away from my bike for a longer period of time. I run the cable through my helmet (set it on the seat), then my gear and lock it.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice guys. I live in Florida. I'm going to UF. And its the middle of summer and this is the hottest August we've pretty much ever had, so gear isn't a huge priority. The fastest I can go on campus is like 20 and I've decided I can live with some scrapes and burns. But thanks again for all the advice and know I will know what to do when I do get gear.

Harley makes a lock device that is hooked on the bike. It has a key that stays with me. Sometimes I use that by putting the metal lock part thru the strap. If anyone takes the helmet, they'd have to cut the strap and then it wouldn't be of any use to them....but mostly, I put it in my saddle bag. I wear a carbon fiber beanie style. It fits in the saddlebag easily, out of sight.

I'll tell you what my hubby said'
I take my $300.00 helmet and cover my $600.00 Zumo.
I take my high dollar stitch or jacket and cover the front of the $$ bike and cover my $200.00 radar detector then walk in.
What can I say, he does do that.:confused2: sometimes I take my $300.00 helmet and place it over the radar detector, come to think of it I bought the zumo and radar detector.

I went shopping at the mall today, and since it's still nice out I rode to the mall. I got a lot of odd looks carrying a helmet into the dressing rooms. oh well....they just don't get it :D:

Could you just get a vinyl coated cable lock? You could snake it through the face of your helmet, thru your jacket sleeve and possibly even around your tire if it's long enough. Then just stow it under the rear seat cowl if it fits.
I'm just a newbie but that's what I have seen others do, and it's what I plan to do. I go to college too!

At first it depended on the neigborhood, I'd just set it on the sissy bar and expect it to be there but always had the niggley feeling as I walked back to the bike. Then I stopped to think, any neigborhood, any where could have one person that couldn't resist the temptation, so now I carry it, make it my purse.

Funny that this thread was bumped
JT and I were just talking about this last night. With the economy "in recovery" there is a new bred of thieves around here known as "grab and go" we have decided carrying our helmets in more situtations would be wise.

I agree that it's probably a good idea esp. considering the cost to replace it. Never mind what would I do out on the road if it did go missing, as I'd never ride w/o even if it was allowed.
