View Full Version : My first wheelie

After getting stuck on the unending loop on my last ride, Cruzman taught me the basics of wheelies. He first taught me how to clutch one up, which I managed a little hop on the first try, but said it was not the preferred way.

Then, he talked me through the preferred way with just the throttle. Again, I got a little hop but no real air.

So today, after I cleaned the sprockets and was riding around to warm the chain up for lubing, I got real air using the preferred way!! :yahoo: Did it one more time to be sure the first one wasn't a fluke before going home to lube the chain. Then I called my Daddy as soon as I got home. He was so proud!!! Yes, I'm a Daddy's girl and proud of it.

(Yes, we both ride Yamahas.)

Gas tank and wallet is almost empty so no more attempts until this weekend when the wallet gets a little cash injection so I can empty it again by filling the tank. Next time, I'll remember to attach the cams so I can have some video proof. Cruzman emailed me a little bit ago to tell me not to try wheelies with the wide angle lenses on the cams because they come off! Perfect timing.

I used to play around with wheelies and preferred the clutch up because you could keep it at a much lower speed. A power wheelie on a 1000RR usually meant the front wheel came down at close to 100mph. The last wheelie I did I took it to about the 11:30 position in a split second and just managed to cover the rear brake. I lost a good pair of underwear that day.

Fortunately, I was only doing about 60 or 70 when my front tire came down!

Just make sure your front wheel is straight when it comes down. Tank slappers are nasty things.

I have absolutely no idea how one does a wheelie. How exactly does one do this?

Well, the way I've been getting them is in first gear after the rpm's are around 7000. I get up to 7k then let off the throttle enough to dip the front end then give it a lot of throttle and watch the front end rise.

Best video I saw:

Did another one today with the cams mounted. Got home and the cams weren't running! All the vids stopped just as I turned on to my "closed course".

Yikes, power wheelies are a scary way to learn, so easy to annihilate your bike and body.

Do you have a suggestion Clanofants? I would love to learn to do a wheelie as well. :D:

Well it's tricky, I learned slow wheelies idle wheelies first, learning to clutch up from a stop and use the back brake, which is technical and not really feasible for people who just casually want to wheelie. So they normally do power wheelies, which are easier because there's no balance or clutch up, it's just power - but becuase you don't learn skills when you crash it's nasty.

It makes sense for people who want to do a casual wheelie to go the power-wheelie route, but I would recommend practicing using your back brake, when you pop it at first, tap the brake to bring you down -so you get it in your head. Then if you do get in a sticky situation with a too-high wheelie you can react correctly and hit the back brake to bring you down.

I don't have a lot of advice because I never casually stunted or did power wheelies on public roads. I hit the lot and learned everything there. If you're serious about learning, hit up your local stunters and spend a afternoon or two in the lot getting the basics down.

Thanks for that back brake tip. I'm looking for a feasible lot now to practice so I get used to the feel of the light front end.
