View Full Version : Pants melting?

Hi all - hoping I can get some input on this: I purchased some Rev-it overpants last week and took them out riding around this weekend. I had an unfortunate incident involving a slick man-hole cover and a steep hill, and my bike went over. While reaching down to turn it off, I accidentally touched the exhaust pipe with one leg.

It almost instantaneously burned a hole through the overpants, the jeans I was wearing underneath, and gave me a small burn on my leg.

It seemed to me that pants that burn all the way through that quickly may not be safe, but not sure if this is what one would naturally expect to happen in a situation like this.

Can you all clarify for me whether this is a quality issue or just bad luck/expected?

Thanks so much!!

I have not fallen hitting the exhaust, however every pair of pants I have had in the past sans my FirstGear, have gotten melted on my exhaust simply from stretching my legs back while riding. I guess i must somehow just touch them and they melt. I have sewn leather guards onto nearly all my riding pants to avert the issue. Most say they are heat resistant, but I have not found that the case. They definitely melt when in contact with the exhaust pipe.

Glad you are ok!

Thanks - I'm glad I'm ok too, it was just a silly biff, no good excuse except I had probably over-done a bit that day (serves me right...).

That's really good to know that you've had the same experience, and also about the leather patch. I will definitely have to look into that - if it's a common problem then it likely isn't a quality or safety issue, and will probably just need a patch, which is actually good to know :D:

Any suggestions on where to get the leather guards and how/where to place them?

I'm glad you are okay, it sucks when you get a new pair of raingear and they melt on you. I had that happen to me on my sporty. I had to sew leather on the inside of the leg to prevent it. Go figure this happen they were HD rain pant (hundred Dolla pants) and they had a heat patch on them but in the wrong place.

Bummer that they even had the heat patch. This was a weird location on my leg since I was bending over the bike, so not sure if having a patch would have even helped. Sounds like it is pretty standard though, so that's good to know...

I seem to remember a very amusing Blue Lightning story about his pants catching on fire (and a boot too)-- not sure if it was on here or ADVrider -- but a must read!

 It may have been both places, but I'm pretty sure it was here!

Great story from BL - mine was much less scary than that!! For now the pants are patched with duct tape, which looks a little funny, but I ordered a more permanent fix in the form of a heat-resistant patch for the hole, so as soon as that arrives I should be good to go, and since the hole is on the inside of my leg, shouldn't even show very much

I haven't melted any motorcycle clothes yet -- but have had some military uniform fires...

Worst one -- getting ready for an inspection and I decided to burn the fringe on the wrist cuff of my BDU jacket that was a bit frayed. Blew it out, closed my wall locker and went about my business. About 10 minutes later noticed smoke coming out of the wall locker and when I opened it my sleeve was now about 3 inches shorter :campfire:

A close call -- I definitely didn't have enough rank to handle a barracks fire!

I look forward to hearing how you like the heat-resistant patch. We sell the Frogg Togg version on our web page and have gotten mixed reviews (some people don't like to mess with the glue). Fieldsheer made a Nomex panel that had Velcro/elastic straps that you could easily put on and take off as needed but as with all good things, it was discontinued.

Hehe, yeah caught my boot and pants on fire on my KLR on a cold winter day when I didn't realize I had my foot up against the header pipe. I'll dig up the story.

Edit. I see someone already linked to it. Link (http://www.twowheelfemales.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4009) :D:

Thanks She Rides - I've got the Frogg Togg patch on my pants now (used stitch witchery and liquid stitch to attach rather than the included glue), so will take that for a test run tomorrow or the next day and see how it holds up.

Found out another interesting thing about my bike - she heats up pretty quickly in heavy traffic (air cooling doesn't work when there isn't air flowing past...), so have to consider how to get to work with less traffic.
