I calls 'em how I sees 'em
The articles that I've read on Skert, and the opportunities that I've seen her in person, she usually wears a Roadcrafter on the streets, and still has her skirt on under her suit. So the "squid" reference can be debated.

I don't need to know how to pick up my bike in a skirt, I need to know how to pick it up in gravel.....

If you are not joking, go to the site and she shows you how to do it. If you are just telling us that you dropped your bike in the gravel, well that just sucks! I hope you didn't have too much damage...
D'oh bike in gravel..........no good.......no good at all.

I was raised in the country and live in such now. I learned to ride on the gravel and now find it not a real problem for me.
But a sport bike I think would be the hardest of all to ride on gravel...yes/no?
That said, I will prob crash my ass now!

I'll have to check that out! I knew about her site, but recalled ya' needed firm ground for it to work.
Haven't let my new bike tip over in my gravel drive (yet?), but did the old bike 2x. Would be nice to know how to get her up if ever needed.
The other part is using my bike to practice!! Just can't find the nerve. At least until it's too beat up to give a rat's a$$.

I learned how to pick my bike up the old fashioned way :lol
Once upon a time I didn't get the kickstand down all the way, so when I went to dismount and started leaning the bike to the side... well it just kept going. I wasn't able to stop the fall, but I was able to slow the fall enough to let it touch the ground more gingerly than it would have. It all seemed to happen really fast, because the next thing I knew my bike was upright again and I was looking around to make sure no one had seen what had happened
Adrenaline... it's a powerful thing...

Ya! But unfortunately, it just seems to get my butt out of the way of the bike faster :no ! Aargh. Crash.

I just found this at Wild Dog Tours. Check it out, page two has a cool way to pick up a bike! I have used this method to move very heavy equipment in my shop. I want to see if it will work on my 1150GS.
I won't be doing it until I get the kink out of my neck from painting the ceiling in my office/tool room in my shop. :(

I got some of the straps they refer to at my BMW dealer for free:confused: They use them to ship the bikes from Germany and they get so many they just give them away for the asking...
So what do you think?

I believe is was my second day on my Ninja when I was just out and about wandering roads I'd never seen before when I got caught on gravel. There were some cars around and lots of hills, so absolutely no good place to stop and just turn around. I figured it would be a good learning experience, so I just went with it. LOL... I've never ridden anything other than a car on gravel before, so I have nothing to compare with...but I had to go pretty darn slow so the tires wouldn't slide right out from under me. I was probably being a tad over-cautions, but turns went real wide and stops came very slowly. It works though and really forces you to trust the physics of balance on the bike!

I live for the day that my bike falls on a blanket in a grassy field, or maybe some soft squares in a parking lot. But NO, my bikes likes to fall at mountain side vistas with the handlebars at odd angles and the tires up in the air, and a cliff on the other side of it. I need to conduct my own class on flagging down passing vehicles and teaching strangers to help you upright your bike. Or getting your riding partner to stop dancing around saying "oh no. oh no" and shut the damn engine down and start helping me get my leg out from under the dripping gas tank...I'll call it "Reality Bike Tips".

Reality Bike Trips.... I like it! When I laid my bike down at the bottom of my driveway the first thing I did was jump up and do the quick head spin "Ok did anyone see that" and try like heck to up right it the only way I knew how. I did it and pushed the broken parts off the drive so that no one would drive over them (broken turn signal) or that I dumped it till I told people.

If you drop it on a hill, it helps to spin it around so the wheels are down hill. It makes it easier to pick up.

Unfortunately I've had occasion to try this - and I just can't make this method work! I can pick up my Bonnie by first getting the tires on the ground for traction, then walking her up, using my legs, but facing the bike, not with my back to her.
Maybe it's different for different bikes. The one in the picture is not flat on the ground due to the sidecases, and I've seen other demos where there were big crash-bars holding the bike partway up. When my bike is down, the tires are not touching the ground...

Oh ya...i know about this. I have actually tried using the "proper" method at Femmoto on a fallen sportster and it seemed easy enough. I also could use that technique on my Vstar, but on the Bandit...NO CHANCE. It is usually loaded for touring and without taking my bags off, (which i have done) I am unable to pick it up solo. I have seen any number of videos on how to do it, however they are all easier shown than done.
My vstar had hard bags and an crash bars, so it was nowhere near as "fallen" an the bandit when it is down.
Any pointers Dakar?? I know you must have had to deal with this issue a time or two. :clapping:
That, to me is truly one of the few downsides of touring solo!!

She and her husband were observing when Maleficent and I took our MSF course. They were opening their own school in Tampa. She is quite amazing.

That's a valid question OhToRide. Since digging a trench isn't an appealing idea, I'd be interested in some ideas on this one too.

My bike took a nap in the garage one day and even with a big bag of mulch under it (that I dragged over and stuck under it while high on adrenalin) wasn't enough to lift it high enough to do the technique Skert shows. Does anyone have any ideas? :popcorn1:
