My new HD 883 Sportster doesn't come with one and I don't like not knowing or guessing based on milage how much gas I have at any given time.
Is there some type of after market fuel gauge I can install?
TIA. Mary

:shrug:I have never owned a bike with a fuel gauge so I can not help you.
I just stop and get gas either when JT needs to fuel up( cause he does not have as large a tank nor does he get as good gas milage as I do) or when I hit reserve I start looking for a gas station.

HD makes a fuel gauge kit for the Sportster that mounts on the right handle bar (part #75031-09 for black or #75338-09 for chrome). It comes with the everything needed for installation. Just like everything from H(igh) D(alla) it is not cheap at $249.95 plus labor. But you might be able to find an after market one on the net. Good luck.

Even high dollar bikes that come with gas gauges struggle with them being accurate. The absolute best way to keep track is to use your trip odometer. Set it to zero after every fill up. Know how much your tank holds, how much you put in, and you can slowly creep to a comfortable mileage before filling up.
Option B is to ride until you run out. :D: Then give yourself a good buffer. With my hardbags (see my avatar) I will get 5-8 miles per gallon less than riding without them.

My bike has a low fuel light. When it comes on I have enough gas to go about 50 more miles.

I have the same bike as KK (Suzi TU250X). Good to know that there's approximately 50 miles left in the tank when that comes on. Of course, my milage will vary.

Yea, I did see that High Dollah option...oh well. I have been tracking it, that's pretty much what they told me to do when I bought the bike. I got about 150mi out of the first tank.....roughly 60mi/gal. I expect to get a little less as my riding picks up.
Thanks girls!!

This is cheaper. Keep in mind you can use your trip mileage but remember wind and speed makes a difference.

How can this work, without a sending unit the tank?
+1 on the gauge being inaccurate. I have come very, very close to running out of fuel several times, but the only bike with a gas gauge actually did run slap out of gas this month, I literally coasted into the most perfectly located gas station ever built. I was ready to go to my knees and give thanks that I didn't have to push a fully-faired touring bike in the Georgia July heat.
The gauge said I shouldn't even be on reserve yet, but I had forgotten that I parked the bike on reserve! :slaphead:
I think the mechanical part of my sending unit, located in the tank, stuck. The bike had sat unridden for a couple weeks and it hasn't done it again....
You'll get used to resetting the odo every time you fill up...and you'll fill up very often on a Sporty!
Besides, nothing like a good long push to sharpen your learning curve!

I was wondering if this excessive heat has any effect on our gas gauges or on our mpg. RT came in last night with 110 miles on the od and his gas light was already on, don't know what's up with that. Anyone have any ideas.

Is he running the A/C?
Sorry, couldn't resist. :D: I will be curious to hear if anybody knows. For me, I get lower mileage in the winter when they are using the 'winter formula' gasoline. Does it have more ethanol? That always makes my mileage go down.

 Yeah, if A/C means "Always Crazy" then he definitely has his on. We were thinking it may be evaporation? But can't figure out how it would get out of the tank. The light isn't suppose to come on until he has 1 gal. left in the tank, which should mean his trip od should read around 150 to 160 miles??? We haven't had temps this high, for this long, in several years so thought it may have something to do with it. We're stumped.

What bike is he riding? It will be curious what style of gauge it has.
BMW the gas sensors are essentially an electronic strip on the inside of the tank, and they are VERY susceptible to problems. In our area I am told it is due to high sulfur in our gas, which is a problem with the lower quality gas in our area (because they don't put the expensive additives Shell, Chevron, etc use to counter act the sulfur). The BMW cars in our area sadly return to the dealer frequently for this problem. So even though I run Shell or Chevron, even I had a gas sensor failure just days before leaving on our alaska trip last year. The guys in the shop said I was pretty lucky, as others have had two or three replacements. Thank goodness mine was still under warranty.

He rides a 2006 HD Street Glide with a full touring package. Right now I'm not sure if there is a problem with the gauge itself or if the gas consumption is out of whack. It was so hot in the garage I was afraid to let him open the gas cap to check on how much gas was actually left (paranoid about it blowing I guess or else I just wanted to get back inside where it was cooler). We have never had a problem with the gauges on either on of our bikes before, which is why I thought it may be the heat factor.
