View Full Version : How can I get rid of gas stink?

I had a mishap while filling my motorcycle today on the way to work - and I stink like GASOLINE. seriously, it was a little geyser out of the tank and all over the front end, the seat, and unfortunately, ME. I have my jacket, pants, and boots hanging in the back room of the office, but my dress (was wearing it under my jacket and over my pants) is pretty smelly!

Any tips? for NOW, so I don't kill everyone in the office (or their brain cells) and for later, when I get home?

I hope you're not a smoker! Stay out of the smoke break areas for sure...

Anyone got a bottle of febreeze in the office? Or you could hang a car deoderizer from your neck

I really just suggest getting a change of clothes. Gasoline might seem inert at first but it can really irritate your skin if left there too long!

It will help if you have a secured outside area where you can hang your things in the sun. The sun will help to dissipate the smell. As for the dress you have on, I don't think there is much you can do until you get home and then you can wash the dress (by itself) in warm water with a cup of white vinegar, then again with detergent, and line dry outside in the sun. Hope you don't have any big important meetings to go to today.

My first thought when I read the title of the thread was "Beeno".
All the answers are good.

Well, I was with you but as she was referring to 'stink' I was thinking less red meat and more veggies but no cabbage.

ha! y'all are terrible. and unforgiven, right now I have two big jars of cabbage that is HOPEFULLY turning into sauerkraut in my kitchen. so stink all around!

My clothes had dried out pretty much, but my sweater was the most stinky and my motorcycle jacket and pants were also smelly. I hung those all out in our warehouse area (not a working space, just for storage) and scrounged a different top to wear around the office. my dress had some small odor but once I got the big stinkers out of my cube it was a lot better!

today I'm wearing my back-up jacket b/c my every-day jacket sleeve is still pretty smelly. hopefully a day out on the porch will do it good!

Hi Kari -

Maybe the dry cleaner can assist? I've had some pretty nasty stains on my riding gear and they were able to get them completely out - hopefully they can do the same with petroleum & the associated aromas that go with it.

Good luck - not fun!

My revit pants aired out really well, and my cotton sweater seemed to as well - but my corazzo jacket still had some odor about the sleeve. inside of the sleeve? I think this is where the brunt of the disaster was absorbed.

So? I left it on the porch for a few days. it's getting better. I've been wearing my Lena jacket (http://www.twowheelfemales.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2976) (normally it doesn't see ANY summer riding) and it was so cool yesterday on my way home I'm glad I did! The Lena is warmer than my Corazzo by a long shot.

and this is PROOF POSITIVE that Astir really DOES need all of those motorcycle clothes. sometimes you need a spare!

My Corazzo is SUPER DIRTY - I can't get it clean any more, and I've decided it's a losing proposition to wash it - so much work to get the pads out and the white doesn't get any whiter! here it is after the last run through the washer with gear wash -

but after this gas mess, I'm thinking of soaking the jacket with some oxyclean and then rewashing. maybe it'll get a little brighter!

(I don't mind the dirt, I think it makes me look really cool, like Steve McQueen. And I knew what I was getting into with a white jacket! it's just getting kind of YUCKY.)

Steve McQueen! I LOVE it! :wootrock: that jacket looks like to belongs to a motorcyclist for sure! :yahoo: They can't see that dirt when you are :w2: as they go by!

My hubby works at a oil refinery so I asked him what you could do to get the gas smell out of your clothes...he said...a match! :gaah: Real helpful...
