View Full Version : New 600cc Bandit & teeny ride-report - photos/vids!

I couldn't decide where to put this, because it's a mix of my first big bike, and a tiny ride report, but it really is a tiny report so i thought it best to plonk this in new riders (feel free to move it mods if you prefer). :):

So first of all, yaaaaay i have my first big bike! :wootrock: Decided to go for a sports type for now, as i have found that the sit-up position for cruisers and adventure bikes was hurting my back quite a bit, and a sports position is much better for me. I bought it mid-September, a few weeks after passing my test. I paid £1700 for a great condition 2001 red Suzuki Bandit 600cc and aaaargh it's going to take me two years to pay it off, lol. Ack. I am now living on cereal and pizza.

Anyway, because i know you all looooove photos and because i've been rubbish at keeping up with the forums here, i thought i owed you some pictures! :yahoo:

Here is me with my new Bandit on the day i went to sign paperwork and such:

http://www.peripheralvisions.co.uk/storage/forum-bike1.5.jpg

I also had a little ride around:

http://www.peripheralvisions.co.uk/storage/forum-bike2.jpg http://www.peripheralvisions.co.uk/storage/forum-bike3.jpg

And a very short and cautious drive-by as i have a go on it around the little estate where the motorcycle shop was:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwPzTJoPBVI

I've named him Sparky. :D: I had him delivered home (it was an hours drive away on major roads) a week later. It's been a very steep learning curve since then. I was so confident on my 125cc, i really enjoyed riding him and felt happy as larry in all situations. I'd driven it down tiny lanes and on dual carriageways up to 75mph.
Getting this 600cc was one hell of a step back. He is SO heavy compared, i have no idea how you guys *learn* on a 600cc!! I would have given up, i am fairly convinced. I am loving driving him, but parking and stopping is another matter, and i've dropped him twice already due to the weight/balance (only dropped my 125cc once in a year and that was only due to lowering the side-stand rubbishly and it folding back up at a petrol station!).

However, he is a lovely bike, and i am taking it steady and trying to take it slow and enjoy it rather than put any pressure on. It's taken a lot of getting used to a sports-bike sound, i am so used to a cruiser sound, so i was hardly revving at all when i first got it and was taking off so slowly at lights i swear the cars behind me were wondering why i was virtually going backwards, lmao! :roflmao:

I'm much better now, i'm happy to hear the revs now.

Here he is up at Exeter at dusk after i drove up for a weekly appointment:

http://www.peripheralvisions.co.uk/storage/forum-bike4.jpg
(phone camera is awful, makes him look tomato-soup colour!)

Oh, i have to tell you, this made me laugh so much (afterwards!). When i first got him it was 9pm at night, delivered outside my house. I walked him down my driveway , which is down a steep incline. Got to the bottom, facing a skip, and thought 'okay so i will reverse and park to my left'. Tried to reverse. Can't. Can't reverse up an incredibly slightly incline. So i am standing there holding the handlebars with my eyebrows raised thinking 'i am actually stuck. i will have to stay here for the rest of my life. what the hell do i do now??'

After phoning my dad to come help i actually managed to reverse the bike, but i think i got my strength from a stubborn desire to not have to be rescued, lol. I really laughed about it later, how casually i walked it down and then tried to go back and nope, not happening. I've learnt now, about inclines when parking!!

Anyway, i went out a for a short 40min spin last weekend, and wanted to show you some roads. I can't take photos as i drive and didn't want to park, so i taped my camera to the left mirror stalk and took some video! I went on a little loop, from Exmouth where i live to Budleigh Salterton, a village nearby with a lovely pebble beach. The route goes over a little common.

http://www.peripheralvisions.co.uk/storage/bikeride-exmtobud.jpg

Bit of a boring trip, but it gives you an idea of my local area and i figured i can point out some highlights and you can just skip through the video to get an idea. :)
The camera position means you can't see much, but i don't have a helmet mount so this is the best i can do. If you just want to see the best bit, watch the third vid, it's the least boring think!

Exmouth to Budleigh loop Pt 1

This bit is fairly boring actually, just roads to get out of the town, one nice road at 2:34, you get a nice view of a residential area on the outskirts of the town as you go down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIklzps9xqA

Exmouth to Budleigh loop Pt 2

0:38 - I am still such a new rider that little things still really please me, like being able to look for traffic and turn into the road without having to stop completely at this junction.
1:30 - lovely little wooded road, fast too.
2:30 - turn off onto the road that leads to the common.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJzb0uzvQXk

Exmouth to Budleigh loop Pt 3

0:10 - the start of the common. You'll see the band of dirt/sand in the middle of the road, it makes cornering tricky as if your tyre goes anywhere near that you slide, and this is a very fast road (60mph limit).
0:45 - right up on the common now. Wish i had the camera helmet-mounted so you could see the surrounding views!!
0:58 - cyclist! :):
1:25 - lovely pair of smooth twisty turns
1:38 - another cyclist.
3:37 - the road does this a lot in Devon, narrows down to one car width (this is quite wide), makes being on a bike much better than a car as you can just sneak through, no slowing required!

(Sounds cuts out a for 30 seconds in middle, sorry)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFx52X-eGX8

Exmouth to Budleigh loop Pt 4 - Budleigh beach

My memory card ran out of memory and tap-control got upset and started shutting off the camera so it refused to record after the first 15 mins of the drive. Managed to get it to record 8 seconds of the approach down to Budleigh beach near the end though! So you do get a bit of a view. :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDuom7yx4gw

Oh, and some bonus photos... This is what i get when i am out in my boiler-suit cleaning and winterising (ACF-50 for the win, it smells of STRAWBERRIES!!) and polishing sparky:

"Why are you lavishing attention on that boring bike?? Rub my tummmyyyyy!!"

Hope you enjoyed! Uploading the vids has taken me forever, and i am driving the bike to a town 30mins away for a dentists appointment tmrw morning, so better head to bed. :D:

Great vids pheral!!

Had to get used to scaring the heck out of myself watching the oncoming cars remembering you drive on the other side of the road!!

Pheral,

Your new bike is awesome! I think you have got wicked guts to go from a 125cc cruiser to a 600cc sport bike!

Your videos are wonderful! Thank you so much for going through all the trouble of mounting the camera to your bike, and then editing and uploading for us to all see! It is so neat to be able to see what it is like where everyone else lives! Thank you for taking us along for this ride! (I have never been in England in the fall, gotta do it one of these years!)

And your kitty is super cute! :)

Wow! Very exciting videos. Good for you. Looks like a fun riding road.

Except for that part where you dodge all the cars as you ride on the left side of the road. Amazing skill...hee hee..

So, know what you mean by that feeling of being uncomfortable when you bump up some cc's. on a new bike.

I'm kind of going through that with my new bike, too, but I love it so much that I'm determined, like you, to just keep putting the miles on.

Beautiful bike. Thanks for taking the time to video and upload for our pleasure.

Exactly! I loved the vids, Pheral... wasn't boring at all. I love seeing the English countryside as you ride along. And the view of the ocean at Budleigh is so pretty!

And, wow... you got your 125cc up to 75mph? Girl... I'm super impressed. Even more impressed that you're handling Sparky so well, after just getting him. May you have many happy, happy miles together! Cheers!

I agree 100%!

My in-laws have been to Europe a few times now, and my father-in-law explained the width of the roads so that didn't surprise me as much as it would have, had I not known. But WOW... seeing it "first-hand" just makes it so much more real.

Amazing!!

Yes, you are doing great with your new bike - wahoo for you ! And I am a new rider too so I know exactly what you mean when you say you are pleased with little accomplishments such as not having to come to a complete stop when you are not required to. I'm at that same point! Good for you with your new bike!

I love the green!! And the stone walls and buildings!! What a beautiful drive, and it looks like you are doing great!! As you get use to your bike, your shifting will be smoother. It is simply newness of a new bike, and before long your bike will be like a nice pair of comfortable jeans.

I have to admit feeling discomfort with some of your turns onto what to me is the wrong side of the road. I will be all nerves the first time I ride left handed instead of right. It is amazing how ingrained what side of the road you are supposed to be on is when you have only ever driven one way.

Thank you so much for posting this lovely ride through your beautiful country!! I very much enjoy the UK, and hope to be able to spend some quality time exploring your roads one of these years.

Hello Pheral,
Love the bike (gee wiz, can't imagine why...) You have great taste! :devillaugh:

Exmouth to Budleigh loop Pt 3
I watched this video (I must admit to rarely watching peoples vids) but thought this was an excellent example your roads and like Astir, I found riding on the "wrong" side a bit disconcerting. I'd have to really wrap my head around it and will have a chance in the not to distant future.

Beautiful countryside but I was surprised how many autos run the center line or even part of your lane!!

Anyway, thanks for the excursion and btw, I want to rub that kitty's tummy!!

To everyone that is saying Pheral is "driving on the wrong side of the road".....you would be suprised how quickly you get used to it, and how easy it is to switch back and forth from driving on the right side, or driving on the left side.

Pheral, your riding skills by the way are amazing, you are an inspiration to all us newbies!!!

Really glad you all enjoyed! :D: And thank you so much for your encouragement everyone - i was actually really enjoying riding with the camera on the bike because i knew i'd be showing you all the video later so i sort of felt like i had you all along on the ride with me cheering me on. :pompom:

And you all have me laughing with your comments about riding on the wrong side of the roads, i forgot that it's probably quite surprising for you guys. I watch so much American tv and film that i am completely adjusted to american driving habits now, but it won't be the same for you, so i can imagine those videos being rather terrifying, lol!

I just love your new name for your Bandit - SPARKY!!!!!! And love your kitty as well - what is his/her name??

Heee, thanks, the name fits the bike so well! It was originally going to be Gambit as i thought i was getting a black one, but then fell in love with the red and decided Gambit wasn't right for it at all, so i chose Sparky. Sometimes he's a little too sparky for me, but we're getting to know each other. :P

The kitty is adorable, he's called Muppet. I live in a shared house with 6 others and one of them owns the two cats, Muppet and Topsy. Topsy is even more of a plaster for attention than Muppet, i love living with them!

- Your new bike is awesome! I think you have got wicked guts to go from a 125cc cruiser to a 600cc sport bike!

Thank you :hug2:It's so easy to forgot that these things are actually difficult and scary, i can be very hard on myself, it's great to hear encouragement like that.

- Pheral, your riding skills by the way are amazing, you are an inspiration to all us newbies!!!

You're an absolute sweetheart to say such a thing! :redface1:

Except for that part where you dodge all the cars as you ride on the left side of the road. Amazing skill...hee hee..

I'm kind of going through that with my new bike, too, but I love it so much that I'm determined, like you, to just keep putting the miles on.

Determination is sometimes all there is, isn't there?? On bad days, and tired days, you just are gritting your teeth thinking i have worked too hard to give up on this now! And it pays off on the good days, ten fold.

Hehe, my skills at willing all the other cars to stay on the right are impressive too, no? :P

I loved your video! I had no idea your roads were so narrow and with no shoulder! What do cars or trucks do if they get a flat tire?

Lol, they get in everyone's way! There is a lot of passing and slowing and things like that around Devon and Cornwall. So cars break down and get in the way, and everyone just does their best to pass them in turns, until they get towed. There are lots of roads that are only one card-width, with passing places maybe every quarter mile, so you drive a bit and you reverse a bit and you drive a bit and reverse a bit...

Here's an extreme example from a walking holiday i had recently in North Devon. The van had to pass us, so we had to take off our rucksacks and press them and ourselves into the hedge while the van drove past at about 2 miles an hour to ensure he didn't drag one of us along with him!

http://www.peripheralvisions.co.uk/storage/forum-van.jpg

You are riding on the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD, it makes me nervous.

 I will inform England.

- And, wow... you got your 125cc up to 75mph? Girl... I'm super impressed.

Those 125cc's don't mess around, both my and my friends 125cc were happy to take us on a 3 hour round trip that was mostly at 65 and 70mph the whole way. They're feisty little engines!

Zee and Astir, i hope you make it here some day, you'd love driving these roads i think - they take some getting used to maybe if you come from huge wide roads, but they are so much fun and so pretty. England overall has pretty small roads but for these kind you'll have to come to the bottom of England, to Devon or Cornwall. We have the best coastlines anyway.

Beautiful countryside but I was surprised how many autos run the center line or even part of your lane!!
Anyway, thanks for the excursion and btw, I want to rub that kitty's tummy!!

Lol, he would love you for it. :D: Ooh snap on the bikes! I had not realised, very cool. Mine is like the little brother of your 1200. :wootrock:

Yes on roads like these there isn't much attention paid to the road lines, mostly because there isn't enough room to fit within them. Vans and tractors just barrel on through, and everyone has to get out of their way!

I've realised i have some video from last year when i had my 125cc, i took it on my first solo ride, to a local tea-room. It shows a typical one-car-width road around these parts (although there are an uncommonly large amount of passing places on this road, perhaps because it's so close to town so it tends to be fairly busy).

Here's 60 seconds of that vid, showing some passing places and me passing some walkers and some cars (at 0:30)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok8AIxYafXQ

(I had the camera taped to my front. Wish i could do that with my Bandit, but the riding position is tipped forward so all the camera would see is the tank!)

Wow dude that is so so exciting!!! You look great on the bike, happy and confident... Those little roads look challenging and fun... You know, the exact same thing happened to me on the thruxton, where I got stuck facing down... I had to get off the bike and push and pull and try not to drop it, it was crazy. Heavy bikes definitely require a lot more planning :-) congratulations!!!!!!!!

Great ride report and congrats on Sparky. Truly a match made in heaven. I've ridden from London to the south coast of England and was surprised at how easy it was to transition to the "backwards" style of road travel. Even still, it's strange to see those cars on the "wrong" side of the road :D: Keep your rr's coming, they're delightful to read.

Wow! The road is gorgeous, but I would hate to meet someone speeding coming at me!!!

Tell me about it! In Devon as a car driver your left wing mirror spends 50% of its life in the hedge, squeezing past people. A few years ago when driving my parents car i've has a Mercedes driver speed round a corner on one of those roads at me, had to do an emergency stop. My dad actually yelled out loud from the passenger seat  i wasn't so worried as we stopped with about two metres apart but i'm glad it didn't come to a crash of course!

OMG, Phearl, passing those two cars in a space that looked like about 24" scared the daylights out of me.

Aw! :hug2: You do sort of get used to it, but frankly i know some people (car drivers) that dislike the smaller roads intensely. Mainly because of the reversing required to get to passing spaces. I'm lucky in that i prefer smaller spaces, so i actually really love those windy roads and all the passing and squeezing through!

I suspect i have a little bit of daredevil in me.

Pawprint2104 - "backwards" eh??:p:

Seriously though, thanks though, to you and phoenix63 and adelgadorey - boy i wish i could actually have you guys with me rather than just as a camera! It was be so awesome to get together as learners and be able to ride along knowing that everyone with us was just as wobbly and have been through the same fears and mistakes.

Adelgadorey - It really is all about learning that they are a different beast isn't it. I am doing much better twith Sparky these past few weeks, as i have stopped treating him like my 125cc and started treating him as his own bike, where i have to consider his size etc when planning trips. It's working way better, less traumatic that's for sure!

We have wider sidewalks

Haaaa, and hey we call them pavements, which i think is what you call your roads! Maybe that's why the people are walking on the pavement in that video, because we got our words mixed up and ended up without a sidewalk at all... :roflmao:

Definitely will try to organise more RRs, Dartmoor is amazing up here so if i can get something sorted on my helmet you can enjoy the view. :D:

I am currently sorting my Bandit for sale sadly (really just decided it's not quite the bike for me, i want something lighter for a while, plus i can't afford it!) so no ride-outs for a while, have to sell mine and then choose another. But will endeavour to supply more crazy Devon riding videos and pics sometime in the future! :D
