I noticed my batter light came on when I started it today so I was wondering how do I check it? ARe there any basic maintenace classes that anyone knows about? I live in the Dallas area.

Hi P-Daisy, sorry to hear you are having battery problems. I'm in North Dallas, but unfortunately I don't know of any maintenance classes in the area. I never work on my own bike ( either to lazy or to left hands not sure which). But if I hear of anything I'll be sure and post it up. Did you ride in the Big Texas Toy Run today?

Is it a battery with caps on the top for adding water? Or, is it a sealed battery (no caps for adding water?). If the former, you can remove the caps and top off any low 'cells' with distilled water and place on a charger. If the latter, you may just need to have the battery charged on a charger. Any autozone should be able to check either type for a dead cell. If that turns out to be the case, new battery required.
Other than that, normal frequent riding is usually enough to keep a healthy battery going. Long periods without riding may require keeping the battery connected to a trickle charger. Our BMW,s electronics create a small draw on the battery that will drain it during longs periods of inactivity whereas other bikes batteries may last longer under the same conditions because there is no draw on the battery when parked.
Maybe someone else will be able to chime in with their experiences and guidance as well.

In your profile you said you just bought your bike I would take it to the dealer and have them check it.
